So now we’re going to tax miles driven? Ask Biden's Nominee for Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg
American Thinker ^ | 01/28/2021 | John Green

Last week, Pete Buttigieg began confirmation hearings for his appointment as Transportation secretary. During the question-and-answer session we discovered why President Asterisk favors Mayor Pete for this position. It seems he has a radical new idea for how to fund highway maintenance and development, which the new administration favors. Funding for our highway infrastructure is currently supported via a fuel tax -- 18.4 cents per gallon of gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon of Diesel. Mayor Pete’s proposal is to move to a tax on miles driven, rather than fuel consumed.

It seems that the administration is concerned that drivers of electric cars are not paying their fair share. Thank God we’re past the silliness of the Trump administration. The adults are back in town, and the Harris/Biden administration is tackling the inequity of highway funding head on. I’m sure racism is involved somehow. I haven’t figured that angle out yet, but I’m sure that the white privilege of owning an electric car has something to do with it.

Given that electric cars still comprise less than 1% of all vehicles on the road, I have a question for the party of science. Isn’t the amount of fuel used to drive from point A to point B still a somewhat useful indicator of the distance from point A to point B? Granted, big cars use more fuel than small cars, but shouldn’t small cars pay less anyway? They impose less wear and tear on the roads after all. Of course, there is the problem that when I’m mowing my yard I’m helping to pay for the highways. Seems like a national issue that the administration should get right on.

But how will we track the mileage that everyone drives?

So the same people who are pushing electric cars now think that electric car owners aren’t paying they fair share.

My fave so far was a tax on unrealized capital gains.

“You might make money... tax that!”

This will be like most other new tax schemes: the mileage tax will be imposed, but the gas tax will remain.

Nope. It is the trucks that damage the roads.

Your mileage is in the computer which can be remotely monitored.

more paper work and regulation.

Remember they were going to finance Obamacare by requiring you to file 1099 forms for every dollar of your expenses.

A bureaucratic nightmare. time consuming and expensive.

These climinidiots don’t or conveniently realize that powering electric cars is going to take a lot of energy. I guess unicorn farts will fill the gap. And they will produce that gas by eating dollar bills growing on trees.

Too many taxes.

Too many laws.

Which prompts this question: What effect would this insane mileage tax have on our trucking industry?

Kinda hard to do in a 1985 Chevy pickup or late 1990’s truck. Not everyone out here bought those 4-wheeled spy apps that cost almost as much as a small home in rural Texas.

That’s what i expect to happen. This talk of how a mileage tax woudl replace a gas tax is not going to happen. Instead we will end up with both a mileage and a gas tax.

Random country wide IRS TAX collector stops.

Wait and see, this is the key to the lock of opening the door to National Federal tax stops, and we can go on from there to having them armed and guarded and Federally sanctioned weigh stations and spot check placement shall be a temporary Federal Zone.

Get down to South America or into the Asian areas.

Paramilitary Federal Spot check points, and Taxation collection points, though they call it bribe money to go from one village or town to another.

Blessings

“Your mileage is in the computer which can be remotely monitored.”

I imagine they will install a GPS device to track mileage.
It will report monthly and if you fall behind on your payments your ignition circuit will be disabled similar to a DUI device.

Just guessing.

Where are the alternative ideas for taxes? I am dead set against the current tax code and this new tax proposal. It is just more of the same. But Republicans don’t talk about reforming the tax code and fiscal policy in general. Sure they will cut taxes. But cutting taxes is not true tax reform. They never cut government - that’s the other side of the revenue problem. How about this? A tax code that requires everyone to pay the same rate. Requires zero filing by individuals. Provides the same rules for all businesses, large and small. Allows businesses to prepare their taxes in 15 minutes and without the aid of a tax accountant and tax attorney. Lastly, simply cut government by 80%. Get rid of it.

Worse is that Buttigieg will mandate that all male drivers must rear end each other at every opportunity.
