“Well, technically West Virginia was a carve out as well.”

Basically done by the Federal government. However, it was not sectioned off by the writers of the Constitution.

Democrats would need at least 60 votes in the upper chamber to pass the proposal, but they may only need a simple majority if the filibuster is abolished.

IF ???

Seems to me, Maryland gave the land to become the capital. It it is no longer the district shouldn’t it go back to being Maryland?!? I know VA demanded their land back and got it.

Unconstitutional since it cannot be a state per the Constitution.

Stacking the Courts will have to come first before getting this.

I agree with the residence policy which you propose. I almost added that (similar) to my own comment. I have never been to those areas in the geographical center of our country, but I totally believe you.

It is a cinch though that giving the Rats another set of Senators out of that dump in current D.C. ought to be out of the question in addition to the fact that the Constitutional Amendment would be unlikely to ever get through.

Makes sense. The constitution requires the consent of the legislature of Maryland to form a state from DC land, which was given to the nation as a gift for a capital city. Maryland would be insane to agree, as the beltway and side roads surrounding DC are within Maryland state lines and maintenance would be the responsibility of Maryland taxpayers. And don’t even think the ink would even be dry before a commuter tax was levied on Marylanders (and Virginians) who work in DC

Actually. if they want the vote there, why not return DC to Maryland? That may add one congressman to Maryland and no senators. reduce 3 votes from electoral college.
And they will get the vote they so demand.
It may need constitutional amendment.
