Electric Car Quotas Have a High Cost
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 25, 2021 | C. Boyden Gray

Posted on 01/26/2021 5:15:57 AM PST by karpov

President Biden can’t mandate that we all drive electric cars, but he’s opening the gates to an electric Trojan horse. In a day-one executive order, Mr. Biden began the process of rescinding a Trump administration rule, the first step toward greenlighting California’s electric car agenda. California and like-minded states plan to impose electric cars through production quotas—whether drivers want the cars or not.

California regulators call it a “zero-emissions vehicle” standard, but green propaganda shouldn’t obscure what’s really going on. Start with federal law. It requires the transportation secretary to set national average fuel-economy performance standards for car makers at the “maximum feasible” level without restricting consumer choice. Instead of mandating a given technology, federal fuel-economy standards allow car makers the freedom to decide how best to improve fuel economy at the lowest cost.

To promote efficiency, federal law broadly forbids state regulations “related to fuel economy standards.” Courts have held that this law forbids electric car quotas and similarly meddlesome command-and-control policies that seek to dictate how car makers should meet federal performance standards. The Golden State argues that a special exception made for California regulations in the Clean Air Act should also be read into the federal fuel-economy law. But that law’s text says no. It forbids fuel-economy regulation by any state—no exceptions.

Next, the policy. Congress pre-empted state laws in 1975 because sprinkling policies like state electric car quotas on top of federal fuel-economy standards makes no sense. An electric car quota in California would force car makers to meet national fuel-economy standards using one of the most expensive fuel-efficiency technologies, undermining consumer choice and increasing costs. One study from 2019 estimates that state electric car quotas will cost an extra $400 for every new car nationwide by 2025.

Those costs won’t be distributed equally.

Seems to me that such orders can be challenged in Federal court.

Zero emissions?

Does that include the electric companies?

I can only think of two good things about all this.

1. Biden is a senile old fool and people will naturally see his deficiencies, as they always did in the past.

2. Kamala is visibly weird and people will not support her, either.

Ding! Ding! Ding! You win the most informing post of the morning award. About 2/3rds of electricity is generated from fossil fuels. Then there’s the fact that CA is having trouble producing enough electricity as it is.

We’d have way fewer emissions if we just used Nuclear power.

But worldwide Communism doesn’t want that much juice in the economy.

What is this "Federal Court" I have head so much about as of late ?

I remember hearing something about it throwing out the ACA as unconstitutional a few years ago, and then again with invalidating election results from AZ, GA, MI, PA, MI and WI. .

Ding! Ding! Government laws promoting for electric cars, and handicapping gas powered cars, has nothing to do with concern over the environment.

Democrats will be glad to debate emissions with you. In the meantime they will continue to destroy any form of transportation they cannot control.

zero emission electric vehicles????

and tell us again: How is electricity made? What percent of electricity is even possible through solar and wind? The answer is a low percent is possible and the reliability is shaky. Coal, oil and gas will be used to generate electricity for many, many years to come.

Given a free choice, knowledge and experience, the vast majority of consumers prefer vehicles with internal combustion engines. Electric vehicles are short range, expensive, have huge quality issues and if ever widely deployed will be an enviormental nightmare. Also if you follow Tesla closely, there is the impression that not only will that company never really be profitable but Elon Musk himself is beginning to be disenchanted by the whole EV craze.

That’s what they said about the 2020 election ... we are under a tyranny now - courts and politicians do as they are told. We have legal no recourse.

In my state, electric cars are powered by coal or natural gas. Just sayin’...

I wonder how many people know that modern diesel trains are electric?

This is just another attack on the middle class. Cobalt, an essential component in the production of Lithium Ion batteries, is in short supply and a major increase in the production of batteries for electric cars will only increase that shortage driving the price up for both cobalt and electric cars. If you make electric cars the only option and if you make those cars too expensive to afford for lower and middle class people than you have the beginnings of a two class system.

These facts were known before the election. I no longer trust the American electorate to “do the right thing”. Many have become addicted to feeding at the government trough 🐷...

A free people will select what is best for them. Technology that adds value is quickly adopted even when the price is high and promises are in the future. Technology that does not add value is dropped by consumers and goes away.

Are consumers freely adopting electric cars? Absolutely not. They are the equivalent of those silly stand-up two wheeled people movers, the Segway.

Without government forcing electric cars on people, and banning internal combustion engines electric cars would have a similar market market penetration as steam powered cars.

If the power of force is required to make a technology change, the one simple fact is that the technology is a step backwards.

Yes,SCOTUS (as well as other courts) failed in a breathtaking way. But think back to the *very* credible story of Roberts expressing fear regarding the Texas case. Also, with the Election theft there was a time limit.

When it comes to state (or Federal) automobile mandates there will be no time pressure and it's unlikely that there will be any fear.

Just sayin'....

Electric cars are losers. They only work in the minds of the delusional utopian Left.

This short Prager University video explains why electric cars are not the wave of the future except in the irrational minds of the Green New Dealers.

Are Electric Cars Really Green?

We need to push stories like the one I saw on smalldeadanimals.com about the environmental disaster that mining for the rare earth minerals causes. “Make the enemy live up to it’s own principles”.
