The Senate wrapped up a rare New Year's Day session with Republicans rejecting President Donald Trump's demand for $2,000 COVID-19 aid checks and overriding his veto of a sweeping defense bill, an unusual one-two rebuke at the end of a chaotic Congress.
Democrats tried a final time to push forward a House-passed bill that would boost the $600 direct aid payments just approved by Congress to $2,000 as Trump demanded for millions of Americans. Republicans blocked a vote, arguing in favor of a more targeted approach.
The rejection of Trump's top priorities, along with the first veto override of his presidency, offered an unusual willingness by the president's party to confront Trump, now in his final days in the White House after losing the November election to President-elect Joe Biden.
Trump lashed out at GOP leadership on Twitter. “Pathetic!!!" he wrote.

They slow walked ACB? No they didn’t. I think the issues with slow walking related to the Rats who could hold up the appointments.
However, I do agree that certain members of the Senate did undercut Trump including McCain and now Romney in certain circumstances.
No surprise as Trump has absolutely no leverage. He caved on signing that Covid relief with talk of rescinding pork and getting increase. Guess what, they took his cave and gave him nothing! He undid lots of his legacy with that stupid bill—giving aid to illegal aliens, restricting border wall construction, giving aid to foreign countries. For what?
Yup. Stupid GOP. Billions and billions in wasted foreign aid & pork but only crumbs for the American people.
It seems that every turn-off on the highway towards a civil war has been ignored.
What would be the theme of a Trump 3rd party? “Trust me, I won’t do it again?!” Not for the first time, Trump caved. He showed again that he was all talk and no action. Many times he’s done this. We need a party that will act on the talk, will not cave.

McConnell scammed Trump and his voters. Mitch wouldn’t have a snowballs chance in hell of staying majority leader if not for Trump and Trump voters.

But you’re right about judges. That’s the one area where Mitch was on same page with Trump. ACB got on just in time. With Trump leaving - probably - that position otherwise would have been filled by Biden

Calling Mitch a coward gives him credit he doesn’t deserve. It implies he’s on our side, but too timid to fight hard. In fact, he’s not on our side, and he’s fighting hard for the side that he’s on.

No, my family hasn’t gone for a year. When I last asked my wife, she said it is still mostly or completely shut down. I wonder how many people who previously went will ever go back.

You all sat in congress Getting paid handsomely while America was out of work for nearly a year in many places, sufferi g, unable to meet their expenses, some losing their jobs forever, and you all refused to allow citizens to get back a very small part of what we’ve paid in for decades when we were hurting the most, and you instead sent our money to places like Pakistan to fund transgenders? And you sent our money during hard times no less, to nations that hate us? And now you have that gall to ask me for more of my money? Seriosuly? Take me off your call list immediately.
