“Apparently one of the biggest problems facing some industries in my area is that many workers are migrating from skilled jobs to low-skill jobs because the low-skill work now pays more.”
The employers of the “skilled” workers will be forced to pay more in order to retain them which will likely result in a cut in the numbers of employees at the new wage level similar to what happened at the entry level positions.
“$30,000 a year plus benefits? “
No 40 hour weeks. My wife’s daughter is back to work since husband laid off in CA. All she can find are 32 hour/week jobs.
So where did you get your economics degree? A Cracker Jack box?
Let me explain reality to you. Increasing wages incentivizes more people to learn the skills needed for the higher paying jobs gradually increasing the labor supply and thus reducing the upwards pressure on wages over time.
“I am for a really really high minimum wage until LEGAL immigration quotas are set to zero”
Would you support a legal “minimum net profit” law? If not, why not?
No. Labor is but one component in the cost of doing business. Often, labor isn't even the largest component of the cost of production and services. Sometimes it's the smallest component.
We can't continue to have a tax payer subsidized low skilled workforce and at the same time unlimited LEGAL immigration. Honestly, I'd prefer out and out socialism to what is going on now.

Obviously you never yourself owned and ran a business as I did for over 25 years. What you claim happens when wages rise by way of market forces rather than a gov’t directive is basically true but it is not the case when the gov gets involved and that has been proven over and over and over again.
People who enter the workforce can and do increase their skill levels while on the job and as they do they are given more responsibility and of course an increase in pay. In your world you believe increasing an employers pay will cause him to become more skilled and in doing that become more productive thus earning his raise after he got it instead of the other way around.
If you ever think about going into your own business, take some friendly advice....don’t at least until you take a few courses in business management.
“We can’t continue to have a tax payer subsidized low skilled workforce and at the same time unlimited LEGAL immigration. Honestly, I’d prefer out and out socialism to what is going on now.”
It is not up to a business to make immigration law. It is not up to businesses to enforce employment laws.
Here is an idea: let businesses do their thing, minimize regulations, and they will fill the coffers of local, state, and federal governments as long as taxation and regulation is reasonable.
Your position is ridiculous. It’s like me saying that you should be thrown in jail until we have a balanced federal budget. You’d never get out and it wouldn’t do a thing about our budget/debt situation.
Your point is ridiculous.
Example: Job 'A' pays $80/hr.
10 people have skills to do Job 'A'. Harry Nobody, currently a janitor making $10/hr sees this and attends night school that teaches Job 'A' skills. Harry graduates enters the workforce in a Job 'A' position making $80/hr. Now there are 11 people that can do Job 'A' instead of 10. This will put downwards pressure on wages for Job 'A'.
The lobar supply functions is DYNAMIC not static.
Which is why they hate tariffs, borders and democracy.
That is why companies have the Human Resources department rather that employment department.
20-30 years ago min wage and low skilled jobs were stepping stones to a better life. Now the right wing CHEAP LABOR EXPRESS has globalized the US economy ( YES I DO BLAME REPUBLICANS!!) and eliminated vast swaths of the skilled and better paying jobs. Now, a lot of unfortunate plebes are going to work at low pay service jobs their who lives. I'll bet they vote Democrat.
There was a time when the Republican Party was actually for the working class.
GOP 1924 platform:
In the history of the nation the protective tariff system has ever justified itself by restoring confidence, promoting industrial activity and employment, enormously increasing our purchasing power and bringing increased prosperity to all our people.
LOL, you really are f’n clueless and actually seem to believe in your convoluted thinking.
A business,,,ANY well run business will pay it’s employees what they are worth and what it takes to keep them with the more PRODUCTIVE employees earning more than the rest.
What you say about a low skilled worker going to school to increase his skills in order that he can earn more is certainly true and that has been going on forever.
Market forces are the best and only way to cause wage increases reasonably and in a way affordable to a given business. Raises mandated by some clueless vote seeking politician will only hurt those who are lower skilled who are always the first to be let go. Businesses only have so many dollars allowed for payroll and a mandated raise does not increase that number of dollars it lowers it and to maintain a balance some employees are let go.
I ran a business and know first hand how utterly stupid it would be to give an employee a raise and then expect him to be more productive. Businesses are about making money...period and the way that is done is to minimize expenses while increasing production. The employees who get raises are the ones who FIRST improve their production and sustain the increase.
I’m not sure which book you are getting your business knowledge from but I think you better go back and look at it again if it hasn’t been recalled.
You are why the GOP is dead. You have no clue and it shows.
we are definately cutting back on fast foot...even for 2-3 people its $25....not worth it...
“No you are ridiculous. You cannot expect the USA to become more free and less socialist by offshoring and importing masses of people every years. Global labor arbitrage is killing us.”
I assure you it is you that is ridiculous. Why? How is a small business responsible for “global labor arbitrage”? I’m assuming you arent doing this on purpose and that you are used to working for big companies and not a small business. From that perspective you wouldn’t have any clue to what heights of hilarity your completely ineffective ideas ascend.
Immigration is a federal government issue. Their solution, of course, is to issue a minimum wage edict or support states in doing the same.
What you are suggesting is to simply cause small business to fire people or close because of immigration and/or lack of effective enforcement of immigration laws.
I dont support rampant legal or illegal immigration. The solution is to enforce existing laws and setting reasonable legal quotas.
Small business has no role to play. Higher minimum wages has no role to play.
So can we agree that you are a funnyman with no grasp on the reality of business or law, or will you regale us with additional tales of delusion?
Question: How can an owner of a Subway Restaurant franchise (for example) that is open 12+ hours/day, 7 days/week afford to pay $15/hour to their employees on top of the rent, utilities, and franchise fees?
Minimum wage is not the problem. Illegal immigration is the problem. Corporations such as Amazon not allowing their workers to unionize is a problem. I’m not pro-union but in Amazon’s case, I am. Jeff Bezos treat his workers like dirt and he encourages high turnover because he does not want to pay workers their raises.
I assume card check unionization is high on the agenda for 2021 after Kamalamadingdong Devi Gopalan-Harris moves into the WH.
