Carmakers will increasingly find themselves in a race to shut, switch or sell factories producing vehicles with internal combustion engines to avoid being left with “stranded assets”, as regulators set a course for a decade of electrification to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Traditional manufacturers are currently playing a “zero sum game” because growth in electric car sales eats into the value of internal combustion engine factories, which “are effectively stranded assets”, a leading analyst has warned.
Philippe Houchois, an analyst at Jefferies, an investment bank, said carmakers’ share prices will be in large part dependent on their ability to avoid losses on fossil fuel assets. “If you want to be a better valued carmaker you need to find a way to shrink your assets faster than a gradual transition to electric vehicles would suggest,” he said.
The industry has already made significant steps away from fossil fuels. The year 2020 will be seen as key for electric cars because of new EU regulations that mandated a limit on average carbon dioxide emissions of 95g/km across all cars sold. The UK has committed to carrying on its emissions regime at an equivalent or stronger level after the Brexit transition period ends on 1 January 2021.
The regulations have prompted a rapid increase in electric car sales as carmakers scrambled to avoid fines worth hundreds of millions of euros – although Volkswagen has already conceded that it will miss its 2020 target, incurring a fine estimated at around €270m (£248m).
BMW announced on Sunday it would build 250,000 more electric cars than it had previously planned between now and 2023. Oliver Zipse, the company’s chief executive, said he wanted roughly 20% of cars it sells to be electric by 2023, up from 8% this year.

The designer Nesbitt also was involved while at GM, worked on Saturn. One unit was the Relay which one might note is cousin to HHR.
I love all cars but the offbeat is intriguing!
If I found the right 3 of the HHR, PT Cruiser or Relay, I’d own all three!
Now it’s 97 Chev. C3500 CC dually 8’, w topper(47,068)
Mom and pop auto repair shops won’t be able to keep up with the tech.
There won’t be enough electricity to charge them, especially in rural areas.
Gas and diesel will skyrocket due to lower demand and most demand being in rural areas which costs in transit.
This is just a way to reduce the number of people who drive and will force people into the cities.
The socialists want what’s left of the rural areas to become primitive villages.
Thanks.
I was looking more at time lines like time of year and market conditions.
I don’t anticipate getting an EV due to the higher cost, increased space, lower energy density, short battery life, and the stupidity of hauling around the ‘full’ weight of depleted batteries. They’re just not efficient.
I’m pro-carbon based fuels. They’re the cheapest, most efficient, most abundant fuel available.
Dems want to outlaw carbon based fuels so US coal, oil and gas are sold to China on the cheap. That’s who they work for. Clinton already did this to coal in the 90s.
Just a reminder that in modern warfare the #1 and #2 targets of strategic bombing campaigns are energy production and manufacturing. Just reason #372 of why Leftists are at war with America and Western tradition (freedom and liberty).
I do keep non-ethanol gas in my pickup, which does sit for longer periods. When I do run it, it’s on the highway and warms up to operating temp for a while.
One other bad results from the 5 min 5x per week is you will destroy your catalytic converter and exhaust system.
Mittens is very happy.
His company—Bain Capital— buys bankrupt companies & parcels out the assets for lots of money.
Bob Lutz went from Chrysler to GM and brought some minions along.
Oh Thank God! That was a sh*t ton of money out of my savings account to pay for it! Love driving it! Even the GF likes how it rides, better than her mid-size SUV and is she ever looking forward to hooking up her new trailer to it to vacation starting this coming Spring!
The deal was I bought the truck, she bought the trailer. Yeah, I know I paid more for my part of the deal but at least mine can move on its own, LOL!!!
Hey, you are making sense, is that aloud on FR?
“Nothing but a push to ensure you can’t go anywhere.”
They want to make it so that the only way you will be able to leave your local area is to obtain a permit and submit to being searched.
We are headed into a very dark time in world history.
Tesla vehicles are getting around 350 miles on a full charge. The next generation of care batteries will see 500+ miles.
Pius: is that a typo or a Freudian slip?
About 10 years ago the one across the street from me asked if I would look over this DIY project he bought on the internet for $50 on how to convert your vehicles gas fueled engine to run on water. The book said you could do it in your garage in a weekend. Can ya believe it?
Libs are sooooo smart.
“Tesla vehicles are getting around 350 miles on a full charge.”
BS. We’ve been through this crap already many times, not to mention the time to achieve a full charge.
“an extension cord needs to be plugged in on both ends for it to work”
Amazing how many people DON’T know that these days. Same people that think bacon comes from the grocery store. Lol
I think they are decent in places where it doesn’t get too hot or too cold and you don’t have to use much juice for HVAC. But heat/defrost is a big juice suck.
Apparently, They’ve discovered a way to turn CO2 into key fuel. It’s in lab stages now, but the means and materials are readily available, cost effective, and scalable.
We’ll see.
Tesla (Nikola), was working on wireless transmission of electric power.
Basically bankrupted him.
The government pushing the end of ICE sales by 2035 is insanity. Even Elon Musk has said that EV sales at best would be about 25 percent of vehicles by then, and ICE vehicles would still be 75 percent of vehicles (meaning that they would still need to be sold). Elon Musk's vision is to have EV robo-taxis that replace UBER, for folks wanting to get around local areas. If people want to go further, they swap one robo-taxi for another to continue to their destination. Elon Musk is laughing all the way to the bank about government idiocy (he plans to get out of car sales in the near future to focus on robo-taxis).
And the diesel drives the gensets.
