Race is on as carmakers shut, switch or sell combustion engine factories
The Guardian (UK) ^ | 12/27/2020 | Jasper Jolly

Carmakers will increasingly find themselves in a race to shut, switch or sell factories producing vehicles with internal combustion engines to avoid being left with “stranded assets”, as regulators set a course for a decade of electrification to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Traditional manufacturers are currently playing a “zero sum game” because growth in electric car sales eats into the value of internal combustion engine factories, which “are effectively stranded assets”, a leading analyst has warned.

Philippe Houchois, an analyst at Jefferies, an investment bank, said carmakers’ share prices will be in large part dependent on their ability to avoid losses on fossil fuel assets. “If you want to be a better valued carmaker you need to find a way to shrink your assets faster than a gradual transition to electric vehicles would suggest,” he said.

The industry has already made significant steps away from fossil fuels. The year 2020 will be seen as key for electric cars because of new EU regulations that mandated a limit on average carbon dioxide emissions of 95g/km across all cars sold. The UK has committed to carrying on its emissions regime at an equivalent or stronger level after the Brexit transition period ends on 1 January 2021.

The regulations have prompted a rapid increase in electric car sales as carmakers scrambled to avoid fines worth hundreds of millions of euros – although Volkswagen has already conceded that it will miss its 2020 target, incurring a fine estimated at around €270m (£248m).

BMW announced on Sunday it would build 250,000 more electric cars than it had previously planned between now and 2023. Oliver Zipse, the company’s chief executive, said he wanted roughly 20% of cars it sells to be electric by 2023, up from 8% this year.

If we could make cars work on radiation instead of Lithium we could cull the herd much faster.

Wow. I owned one exactly like the photo. Purchased it just out of warranty. No heater (no big deal in Chicago). Quickly lost the ability to steer right (no kidding it was Chicago) had to plan route carefully. Turn signals would sometimes signal an opposite turn. Darn thing did always start. Fortunately it was a vehicle I used about twice a week, but it was a challenge. One winter was enough. Have not owned a GM vehicle since, and will not own a GM vehicle.

Just wait until we hit the “brick wall” of a.) inadequate power grid to supply power to EV’s (some say 5% EV’s will do it) and laws will be written about when/how often you can charge your EV, and/or b.) inadequate power generating capacity that will 1.) force us to wait days to charge our EV’s and/or 2.) bring us into a world of rolling blackout like CAL or Nicaragua.

Question for car collectors.

When would be a good time to sell an investment 600 hp Camaro?

It’s not mine, I think it’s a late model.

Mass hysteria.

It is, indeed. It has happened before on a smaller scale but as self-destructive as this will turn out to be:

the Xhosa tribe of South Africa, in 1856, fell under the sway of the prophetess of doom, Nongqawuse She convinced them that salvation from their earthly troubles lay in destroying all their cattle and crops.

It did not turn out well for them then. It will not turn out well for us now.

It’s the same reason railroads switched from steam to diesel.

No it is not. Steam to Diesel is still using an onboard combustion engine. The “combustion” to generate the electric for the battery is not on board (not counting the hydro generation).

I get a kick out of the argument about the electric cars being better for the environment over gas engines. No one calculates the damage that is going to be done by the residue from the batteries plus from the electric generation.

When the subsidies vanish, the electric cars will be beyond the reach financially of most people.

“ regulators set a course for a decade of electrification to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.”

This quote brought to you by people who think electricity gets to the outlets by magic.

That old urban legend is a lie. They only have to supply parts for warranty work. And those do not actually need to be a direct replacement, only equivalent function.

In the case of software, they can even degrade car performance, so upgraded software doesn’t even need to be equivalent.

When government uses force of law to require something, and bans the alternatives, we have never benefited as a country.

One of the many “shop tricks” I have learned over the years, and am trying to pass to my grand children, an extension cord needs to be plugged in on both ends for it to work.

The elites don’t care about that, they are rich enough that they will have theirs. To hell with the peons they say, let them eat cake

The Chevy Malibu was once a proud nameplate.
They have diluted it to the point where it’s now a warning label................

You realize of course, that it is the Government that forces automobile manufactureres to produce a 10-year supply of spare parts (including engine parts) for cars that are produced.

Of course. But that's besides the point.

As I said, government control is the driving force here. This not a natural evolution like steam to diesel was.
