IIRC, cases of Vitamin D toxicity come from people taking large amounts: like 60,000 IU per diem.
That would be about 25 soft-gel capsules a day for an extended period.
The right amount of vitamin D is notionally 4000 IU per diem (the oft-quoted 600 IU figure seems very low).
But you are correct: we should certainly get Vitamin D from sunshine if we possibly can.
I take 5.000 units of Vitamin D per day. I know people who take 10,000 units per day. If you are afraid of Vit D toxicity then watch out for your shadow!

I keep mine from 55-62 throughout the year and only cut back on the supplements once Tax day arrives - and around the end of September. Even then, my consumption compliments it by how much daily sun I'm getting.
