I’ve lived in Missouri for 66 years and never has anything “vegan” ever been a “favorite” in this state.
I’d love a good jam cake
I used to make my dog cookies, tuna and salmon are major ingredients.
Jam cake? explain.

Looks like 26 distinct entries, although there are strong similarities among red velvet options (Alabama v. Georgia) and cookie options (California, Delaware, Minnesota).
I’m going to WV
FWIW, the magazine must have REQUIRED an answer that is SWEET. - Most every native of Texas KNOWS that TAMALES are “the favorite holiday treat” here.
(IF you want tamales delivered on Christmas week and/or for New Years Eve, you may want to order them a month or two ahead.)
The same is TRUE for “hickory-smoked” BBQ TURKEYS.
(I ordered my > 20-pounder in SEPTEMBER & will pick it up sometime after lunch on 24DEC20. After that, I will stop at REUBEN’S TAMALES to pick up the family’s tamale order.)
yours, satx
You are correct though Christmas tamales are usually sweet with pork and raisins.
Not my thing but I get it, its a special treat
New York, New York should be the Seven Fishes Salad
On Christmas eve
I love the feast of 7 fishes!!!
If they polled me, I’d answer Fruitcake. I really enjoy fruitcake. Just bought four more today to go with the ten that are already in the freezer.
My brother and I have been gifting the same fruitcake back and forth for the last 29 years. It’s all in the wrapping and difficulty of removal.
I like mint chocolate chip ice cream :)
Brother just brought me some fruit cake.
The secrets in the sauce...
Well, slightly similar to spice cake.. it has cocoa, buttermilk, blackberry jam, pecans, cinnamon, allspice, cloves. Some put caramel icing on it but I like the chocolate icing that’s similar to fudge.
I’ve never even seen a Peppermint chocolate chip cookie .... let alone had one!
No way are ‘vegan Christmas cookies” a big deal in Missouri. Nor are chocolate Santas a thing in Illinois.
Believe it or not, a pair of twins (who I went to HS with in the early 1960s) have been mailing the SAME Collin Street Bakery fruitcake back & forth to each other since 1966, when DONNA bought the fruitcake & mailed it to DANNY (who was stationed with the 82D ABN Division, Ft Bragg, NC at that time).
Having forgotten WHO gave it to him, Danny mailed the fruitcake to his twin sister for Christmas 1966 & that started the “FAMILY TRADITION” that continues until today.
(It is “an inside joke” here is that ANYTHING DONE TWICE in Texas becomes an “Important TEXICAN Tradition”.)
I believe that 2020-21 is Donna’s turn to have “custody of The Family Fruitcake” until next December.

Same thing in Ohio. Pumpkin pie would be my Ohio dessert guess. Pennsylvania would be a strudel or a nut roll. This list is whacko.
Ours was a very cheap, low quality fruitcake. After 29 years it’s still pretty soft in the package. I came very close to slicing it open when I was trying to open the packaging. We’ve packed it in Kevlar, concrete, welded inside a steel box, glued into a box of rocks and even inside a five gallon bucket of flour. It’s all in the package.
Fun tradition. We’re kind of running out of ideas.
This year, I wrapped the fruitcake in plastic bags and put it into a cheap ammo box. I then filled the box with almost a full case of crystal clear caulk. (I work for a caulk and sealant manufacturer so I get it for free)
