LONDON - Lost among the jubilation of America's vaccine rollout this week is an uncomfortable reality: The world's poorest countries will have to wait months and possibly years to see any doses at all.
The U.S., Canada, Britain and the European Union have pre-ordered enough Covid-19 shots to inoculate their populations several times over, subject to regulatory approvals.
"Higher income countries like the U.S. and the U.K. are putting themselves at the front of the line - that's obviously what's happening," Philip Clarke, a professor of health economics at the University of Oxford, said. "The clear failure here is not having stronger international institutions and stronger funding to pay for a vaccine globally."
One of these institutions is COVAX, led by the World Health Organization, whose aim is to stop this exact thing from happening. It has raised $2 billion from dozens of countries and international organizations, and wants to provide 1 billion shots to poor countries next year.
It was undermined from the start, supporters say, after President Donald Trump declined to give the scheme any backing. Russia is the only other major economy to opt out.
COVAX says it's still $4.3 billion short of the cash it needs. And many experts are now skeptical it will ever provide the developing world with the necessary protection.

$oro$ too
“didn’t we pay for the development/manufacture of said vaccine?”
It’s from each according to their ability (us), to each according to their need (them). Welcome to our new world.
In the media push for Trump administration incompetence we were told there were insignificant cases, if any, in Africa. Now they’re being wiped out because we’re hoarding vaccines...which is it?
The danger of the vaccines is to great.
This is comical. First, no way we could get a vaccine in a year, but we did! Now, even though America is supposedly in Covid crisis with more cases and deaths than any other country by far, we should give other countries the vaccine instead.....what a joke.
****I wonder if the function of this kind of story is to increase our respect for the vaccines. The ol’ scarcity card.****
Why not? It worked for toilet paper.
You are missing the point. The vaccine will stat showing side effects in about 6 months which will kill off a large part of America and turn the rest into 40 IQ zombies.
Why waste it on countries who are already at that level. The whole plan of this pandemic is to convince us to take a vaccine for our own good. Scare enough of us to take that red pill.
Once the “First World” countries get bagged and tagged like farm animals, the rest of the world will fall in line.
It’s worth repeating that if this virus was truly a mass killer, then we could have billions of doses in short order.
The recipe could be mandated to be given to facilities that have the production capabilities all over the world. The fact that it is not speaks volumes.
Even the FDA waited two days before approving after the Pfizer green lighted it. How many people did the FDA kill?
Obviously it’s not the killer it’s been sold as.
And how much did the poor ones contribute? Yea, didn’t think so.
Leaders of poor countries are generally fabulously rich. If they cared, they could have given money to the research effort. Since they didn’t, it proves they don’t care for their people.
Poor countries tend to be much younger so they can shake off COVID-19 virus unlike the elderly in much of the 1st world.
They’ve been on HCQ and Ivermectin, couldn’t afford the Big Pharma “solutions”, and it’s working. Look at India, for example.

Do you really think they’re managing extreme social distancing and mask wearing to get curves like that? No, it’s HCQ and Ivermectin prophylaxis among health care workers, first responders, and others.
And the poor countries have not had access to Hydroxychloroquine obstructed and maligned.
They’re better off in that regard than we are.
You’ll thank us later.
Until every American citizen that wants it gets it, of a single dose elsewhere. And illegal aliens, get on condition of deporting.
Politicians first, please.
Reverse psychology. Creating a perceived shortage to drive up demand...

The weak link.
Don’t you know that when you make a pot of chili, you should make ten gallons of it and feed the neighborhood before your family gets any? I thought everyone did that. /s
Poor countries have access to the hydroxychloriquine cocktail drugs, and they can buy them over the counter for next to nothing. Hardly any of their citizens die of Covid-19 because of it.
