Waffle House’s Stand Against Lockdowns Is Exactly What America Needs—Almost

Waffle House CEO Walt Ehmer’s stance against lockdowns is courageous, but ultimately bolder action may be required to save businesses from the pernicious effects of lockdowns.

Walt Ehmer, the CEO of Waffle House, didn’t mince words when he explained his biggest problem with economic lockdowns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

"None of the people who make the decisions to shut down businesses and impact people's livelihoods ever have their own livelihood impacted," Ehmer recently told Business Insider.

When the coronavirus swept across America earlier this spring, Waffle House, which has locations in 25 states, was forced to shut down some 700 restaurants across the country. This put roughly 28,000 hourly Waffle House employees out of work, who became part of the 26.5 million Americans who filed for unemployment that month.

The story of these workers underscores an overlooked reality of the pandemic: lower-income Americans are being harmed the most by lockdowns.

It’s safe to say the politicians ordering these lockdowns have not suffered the same way. For starters, they still have their jobs. But it’s also more than that.

The reality is that many politicians have probably seen their wealth increase. The lockdowns have been hell on Main Street but great for Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit an all-time high this week, in large part because so many corporations have seen their competition sidelined, increasing their market share.

I work part time for them. The thing I love most about WH management is that they can rank high up the chain, but if they walk in and see it’s crazy busy, they will pitch in and help...even washing dishes.

I’ve been off 3 months medical. Start back this Fri...I’m excited to be going back...

I’ve never eaten there.

Now added to my list of breakfast options. Don’t they also stay open during storms and Hurricanes? If so, be sure to tip the wait staff generously.

How many of those, who lost their jobs are minorities, women and people without the skills to get new jobs?

“...will pitch in and help...even washing dishes.”

That is awesome to hear. Just like lots of small business owners.

Every now and then, I partake of the waffle house.

Love the hash browns with onions.

I have heard similar things about WH management. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I like the place.

This bears repeating - here, on social media, and at every presser in which some arrogant ass of a governor (there’s no lack of choice here) is announcing yet further restrictions.

Every one of these bastards deserves the treatment that Murphy got ythis weekend. Repeatedly.

Our county has a group of us restaurant owners banding together to defy our idiot governor but with a twist.

The FDA lays out the technology here

https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-covid-19-and-medical-devices/uv-lights-and-lamps-ultraviolet-c-radiation-disinfection-and-coronavirus#:~:text=A%3A%20UVC%20lamps%20are%20electronic%20products.%20The%20FDA,products%20may%20also%20be%20regulated%20as%20medical%20devices.

UVC lights for heating and air conditioning ducts can be obtained for around $150 for quality commercial units. Simple to install.

Installing this week in my restaurant.

My premises will be cleaner and safer than the office the health inspector came from or the car he drove to get there. My customers will have the same ... a safer place than their own home.

Reservations anyone ?

We’ve seen it happen, more than once. Management comes in, sees a rush in progress with tables needing to be cleaned, or dishes/silverware needing to be washed, and they suit up with an apron and get busy.

Adding to your comment, There are a lot of Waffle Houses in the boonies at Interstate Hwy. ramps that are the only employment opportunity for miles and miles.

Traveling on Christmas day I can say they were the only restaurant open.

We have relatives in the Midwest and Southwest, who often have to drive long distances in the evenings and early morning.

Waffle House is often their only place for food and a safe rest.
