Conservatism wasn’t made better off by the four-year campaign waged against Speaker Newt Gingrich by some House conservatives who considered him ideologically unreliable.

Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis? Conservatives LOVED Newt Gingrich. If anything, it was RINOs who drove him from office. Or at least didn't come to his defense when he came under attack.

Roff appears to be another one who can’t tell a conservative from a RINO.

Note how he fails to name the alleged “small group of so-called purists on the right” who “crossed swords with” Reagan, too.

I don’t think I can remember an instance when Republicans defended a conservative under attack.

It seems to be a defining characteristic of Republicans going back as far as I can remember.

After all conservatism is not really a Republican thing. You might recall that Nelson Rockefeller was the man that defined Republicanism from the 1930s to the 1670s.

That brand of Republicanism is still very strong in much of the country. I know it is here in Ohio. They seem to be the only kind of Governor that gets elected here.

They call themselves moderates but they are Progressives.

yeah did he write this while on the toilet?

He should have flushed it.

Conservatives did like Newt.

Idiot.

I haven’t watched fox in 7 years. Too much arguing and yelling.

Now I just want it to die.

I don’t know who forced or paid fox to do what it did on election night (tried to watch first time in 7 years and 4 different times i shut it off) but I am loving watching it burn

As Speaker, Gingrich’s leadership was erratic and out of touch, and was further compromised by an affair even as Bill Clinton was being hammered for his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Reliable GOP conservatives in the House despaired that Gingrich would cost the GOP the majority that he had won them.
