This is not a surprise if you’ve been keeping track of At&T’s activities since they bought Time Warner.
They ended the distribution relationship between Diamond and DC around the time of the Wu-Flu shutdown. Then they announced that three regular comic stores were going to distribute their books worldwide.
This effectively said “DC is going out of the comic book business” several months ago.
That was the situation in the early years of the Republic. Newspapers were rabidly Federalist or equally rabid (Democratic-) Republican. No reader had any doubt where the newspaper stood politically and no one expected objective reporting on topics other than the weather.
But at least there were rival papers and the public were free to choose. Today, one has to search to find the conservative viewpoint.

DC and Marvel, with few exceptions; have been pretty much unreadable for the last 20 or so years. I stopped hoping for an editorial shift to fix their problems and have begun eagerly anticipating their shuttering and the licensing out of the characters to publishers who are eager to tell interesting stories again.
P.S. Keep the pre-2000’s reprints coming. I sold all my long boxes when I moved last year and plan to replace them with hardbacks.
Archie Comics introduced gay characters in 2010, Harvey Comics (Richie Rich) ceased publication in 1994.
