Surging virus cases get a shrug in many Midwestern towns

Danny Rice has a good sense of how dangerous the coronavirus can be.

What puzzles him are the people who have curtailed so much of their lives to avoid being infected by the virus.

“I’m not going out and looking to catch it,” he said, sitting at a cluttered desk in his auto repair shop in the tiny eastern Nebraska community of Elmwood. “I don’t want to catch it. But if I get it, I get it. That’s just how I feel.”

Plenty of people agree with Rice, and health experts acknowledge those views are powering soaring COVID-19 infection rates, especially in parts of the rural Midwest where the disease is spreading unabated and threatening to overwhelm hospitals.

It’s not that people in Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and elsewhere don’t realize their states are leading the nation in new cases per capita. It’s that many of them aren’t especially concerned.

Wayne County, home to 6,400 people in southern Iowa, has the state’s second-highest case rate, yet its public health administrator, Shelley Bickel, says mask-wearing is rare. She finds it particularly appalling when she sees older people, who are at high risk, shopping at a grocery store without one.

Live your life and stop cowering in your basement/closet.

BS. The whole mask thing is an attempt to dehumanize and stoke fear in the population. Just wear your mask... and get used to it, because the burqa is next.

I despise the mask mandate because I like to breathe without breathing in what I just exhaled, I like to see people's faces, and I have a hard time understanding people whose voices are muffled. I don't believe masks are any more effective in stopping the virus than a chain link fence is in stopping a dust storm. And I'm certain that masks-wearing presents its own health hazards.

I only wear a mask--actually, a bandanna--when I'm in a business where masks are required, and it comes off the second I'm out the door.

Masking is a psychological barrier not a physical barrier. It only makes the wearer "feel" safe.

Medical people don't wear masks to stop the spread of viruses but that of germs and bacteria, living organisms that are much larger than the inert, submicroscopic virus particles, which are so small that you need an electron microscope to see them.

And they don't wear them for very long. Their usefulness is only for a brief period of time. Then they are disposed of regularly in biohazard waste containers.

The corona virus passes in and out and through 99.9% of the masks used today. And because our ignorant lay government officials mandate the wearing of masks all of the time, people wear them for long periods of time.

Today, masks have become more of a fashion statement for many people more than a medical protective device. What's next, personalized hand sanitizer key chains?

A mask won’t protect you from the virus.
It may prevent you from spreading it.
Maybe.

At this point, “It’s the flu, bro.” People are NOT dying on the hospital lawn, and they are lumping in people who drank cheap Mexican beer as “Corona” cases. The FLU kills old and infirm people. But, wait. There are almost NO flu cases deaths, all of a sudden. Because at this point the Kung Pao Bat Lurgy is this year’s “flu”.

An N95 was never designed for anything but filtering dust. They only changed the usage allowance because they are made in mass quantities and were the only masks to be found back in March.

You are not considering T Cell (long term memory) immunity. Yes, antibodies rapidly decline in mild or asymptompatic cases sometimes in a matter of weeks they are undetectable. But this is not the body’s only immune response.

COVID19 is in the family of coronavirus. There are 4 strains of coronavirus that represent up to 25% of common colds each year. The fact is most of us have some T Cell immunity response to COVID19. It’s why most young and healthy adults are asymptomatic to mild. Their T Cell immunity from the cousin common cold caronaviruse they’ve had rapidly stops the infection before becoming severe.

This immune response breaks down in the elderly and immunocompromised.

The dems are stupid as usual. The new rapid test generates a lot of false positives. Medically not bad, but a political football. And as far as “old people”: the mask does not protect the wearer, it keeps coughs and sneezes from traveling very far.

It is hard to cover everything in a post. I was being general. I have read abou the Tcell immunity. But it has been awhile and I appreciate your reminding me about them.

Oh come on...loud talking?

This is nonsensical.

Maybe where you are masks have gone away but they have not here. A few bar patrons are not going to fuel this so called surge.

We are being played again.

The science is perverted and agenda driven. “Cases” involve bits of virus in amounts so miniscule they are not transmissible but we need to lock it all down again and cower.

No. Not again.
