Nixon's 1968 comeback followed the Democrats' 1964 landslide against Barry Goldwater.
Republicans felt chastened and instructed that "extremist" candidates can't win.
It's a lesson that informs many Republicans up to this very day.
Nixon's 1972 victory against George McGovern should have taught Democrats the same lesson, but Nixon's later Watergate resignation taught them instead something very different: Democrats can mold & defeat the will of American voters through scandals against Republicans, real & manufactured.
That's the lesson they employed against Trump's administration and reelection.
Sadly, for the moment the lesson seems to have been reinforced by victory.
