McConnell: ‘We’re going to clean the plate’ on judges

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vowed Friday to continue confirming both U.S. circuit and district court nominees through the lame-duck session and right up to the end of the 116th Congress, which must adjourn Jan. 3.

“We’re going to run through the tape. We go through the end of the year, and so does the president,” McConnell said Friday on the show of conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. “We’re going to fill the 7th Circuit. And I’m hoping we have time to fill the 1st Circuit as well.”

The seat on the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals opened up after the Senate elevated Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court in a truncated nomination process that culminated in her confirmation in the Senate on Monday. The other seat, on the 1st Circuit, opened after the death Monday of Juan R. Torruella, 87, who was nominated by President Ronald Reagan.

After the vote on Barrett’s confirmation, McConnell teed up a Nov. 9 vote on the nomination of James Ray Knepp II to be a judge for the Northern District of Ohio. More than two dozen nominations for lifetime appointments remain pending.

With most judicial vacancies taken care of in this Congress, the Senate will have PLENTY of time to confirm Trump’s second-term cabinet nominations.

Because I believe the Republicans will retain the Senate.

Does this mean he’s going to start ignoring lack of “blue slips” from Dem Senators for the district court nominees?

I hope so. Screw “congeniality”.

First item of business should be to nuke the filibuster for confirmations.

If McConnell is trying to redeem himself from spineless cowardice in the past, he’s doing an okay job.

I hope Mitch has taken steps to protect himself when the post election crap starts. The leftists make a habit of showing up at his house.

It’s still a lame duck session because senators will be voting when will be departing, from retirement or defeat.

I am so glad to hear this. When we lost the House majority, Republican congressman just went home after the election. I called many House members‘ offices to ask them what they would be doing in the weeks before they became the minority. The people who answered the phone just kind of shrugged and basically said they weren’t going to do anything.

When the Democrats lost the house they spent the entire time between the date of the election and the date of the new Congress doing everything they could to make it tough for the incoming Republicans.

I remember when Clinton was going out of office he said he did not sleep for the last three days pardoning people, issuing executive orders, leaving poison pills like new standards for arsenic in the water etc. Obama did even worse setting up an attempted coup on the incoming president.

Thank you Mitch McConnell for at least coming through with judicial confirmations.

If we hold the senate and the white house in the election we can let it take a bit longer.

Like Ginsburg I think the 1st circuit judge was trying to deny Trump the right to appoint his successor.

He loves doing this. Almighty Father, give the President a supporting Congress, especially a strong Senate-- to uproot the evil, drain the swamp, and restore righteous rule.

Bloomberg put about 200 million into the 2018 mid term house elections. Also, the democrats in california used bundling to effectively steal 7 house seats from republicans in the two weeks after the election. that is 7 republicans won house seats in california that were later overturned by democrat ballots.
