A Thought experiment
What would happen if a president was leaving office and he fired a bunch of officials that the incoming president was fine with having continue in office?
We know Trump is going to win but suppose Biden was set to get inaugurated on Jan 20th and Fauci is fired, Wray is fired and a bunch of others are fired. Biden protests “I am fine with Wray staying, I’m fine with Fauci staying.” Yet for two months these guys are out of a job and a new nomination process must begin to reinstate at least some of them to their positions.

Since Fauci is a gravy-train-riding Federal employee who “owns his job”, it would be easier to arrest the seditious SOB than to fire him.
