Doubling the child tax credit and doubling the standard deduction more than made up for eliminating exemptions for most families. I’m sorry if that wasn’t the case information you personally, but most families got a tax cut.
In 2016, The standard deduction was $12,600 and each exemption worth $4050. A couple with 3 children could exempt $32,850 of income and claim a credit of $3000. After the tax cut, they’d exempt $25,200, but claim a credit of $6,000. The 7,650 decline in exempted income is offset by a $3000 increase in credit. Unless that family’s marginal tax rate exceeds 3000/7650 = 39%, they have a lower tax liability under the new law. For 2017 (the first year under the new law), any family with income under $418,000 would have benefited. Obviously the vast majority would be in that category.
This is just an example to give concrete numbers, but it is true that while some may have done better under the old law, most people have seen a tax cut.

Yes, more than one - but the children are ageing out of it (so it is only partial).
I know many have seen a tax cut; I didn’t dispute that. Those exemptions (for full-time students) would last for a few years into adulthood, while the child tax credit is cut in half when the child reaches 17 - and my children have reached/are reaching that point. This particular niche is hit hard.
We are seniors all the bracket raises made us ineligible for most everything, especially Medical. Between travel, co-pays, and non-qualified meds, Elective surgeries to fix REAL MEDICAL PROBLEMS, we still were filing SHORT FORM.
The fix for BAD CATRACT IMPLANTS IS LASIX. $5,000. Followed by all the OTC DRY EYE DROPS. AND Reacted to 1 dose of RESTASIS. Nexium was cut from TRICARE LIFE, leaving the 3 that caused HIVES, I’m a Type 2 Diabetic, Predisone shoots my BS to 800 or more.
