Netflix subscription cancellations skyrocket after ‘Cuties’ backlash

“Cuties” turned out to be ugly for Netflix.

The streaming service has watched subscription cancellations skyrocket by 800% after the French coming-of-age film triggered a boycott in early September, analyses show. Within two days of the movie’s premiere, #CancelNetflix became the top trending topic on Twitter and a petition on Change.org garnered hundreds of thousands of signatures.

Netflix’s chief financial officer Spence Neumann didn’t mention “Cuties” in a third-quarter earnings call this week, instead focusing on the first half of the year, when coronavirus lockdowns nationwide drove subscriptions.

Neumann told investors the company “came pretty close” to meeting its membership goal of 195 million worldwide. For the three months that ended Sept. 30, Netflix added 2.2 million global subscribers — down from the first two quarters of 16 million and 10 million, respectively

But numbers analyzed by New York data analytics firms Antenna and YipitData tell a different story — that the protest, led by conservatives who claim the film’s portrayal of pre-teen girls living in Paris “hyper-sexualized” children, had made a big dent in subscriptions.

Ok, with most other streaming services illegal or otherwise not available in the Philippines, you tell me what other options I have?

Doing without any media is not an option. And I forbid my kids to watch any animated tv series with any production credits from Communist China and that’s pretty much what they show on broadcast TV here now. That, and low-budget government propaganda series and South Korean telenovelas.

We cancelled Netflix over a year ago after the Michelle Wolf “Salute to Abortion” and we will not be customers again. My kids miss the streaming service as they did have a ton of content, but at some point you have to say enough.

I do not understand why any business would go out of their way to offend or alienate a large number of their customers this way.

The thing is, this was not their first foray into child sexualization (not to mention putting pornography into its regular programming). It was just the first time for some reason it was noticed.

There are so many channels for free on an antenna, coupled with numerous completely free streaming apps, there is zero reason to pay for any subscription services these days. And with those, you literally control what they make money off of and don’t...you don’t watch it, they don’t make money on it.

Oh...in the Philippines. Don’t know how many of the free apps would make it there. Well...can you get YouTube? There are a lot of kids channels and movie channels there with clean content. EncourageTV is one with a lot of family programming both for adults and kids...not the only one, though. Peppa Pig is a popular cartoon (never watched it - can’t endorse it - just see it pop up as a suggestion) with its own channel...sure there are others like it. You can also see if PlutoTV is available where you are.

There is also the HappyKids.tv app and KiDoodle - if they are accessible where you are.
