The only subway busker I ever gave money to was a guy that used to play a hammered dulcimer in the Chicago subway in the 90s. Amid those hard concrete acoustics, it sounded absolutely beautiful.
It’s basically a little piano, without keys. You hold little hammers, and hit the strings yourself.
