Saying the media panic is overblown is 100% correct. It doesn’t mean anyone is saying it isn’t a serious virus. It’s that we cannot shut down the economy just like we can’t shut down the interstate due to accidents.

Put me on the side of “many states over-reacted in a big way, and violated the constitution in doing so”.

My view is what I think is the correct context should be: For most people, this virus is not deadly. For some, it may be, and most of those people are identifiable, and those people should protect themselves where they can, and have others care for them where they cannot, or, to the extent of their personal rights they wish to be protected.

Instead, we have this single, stupid, monolithic approach, which has far greater destructive components to it than being killed by the virus (depression, suicide, stress, joblessness, loneliness, delay of needed medical treatment, the list goes on)

I am hopping mad about this right now. I found out yesterday that one of my best, and few lifelong friends had died. And he won't have tribute paid to him by those who loved him (including me) because of this idiotic approach to the virus.

This man, who gave me so much joy in his life (He is one of those people who everyone has multiple funny stories about) won't have his family comforted as he should have, and people being able to share memories of his life in the way that we have always done.

Yeah. There's the Zoom meeting that is going to happen. Not to disparage this, because it is felt by some that this is the best way to handle it, and perhaps some people DO like something like a Zoom, and I am an old fogey looking for the surety of a human touch.

I am retro about a lot of things now, and this is one of them. The family did invite me to the small service, and I'm gonna wear a suit, not go in a damn pair of blue jeans and a collarless shirt. He was one of my most treasured friends, and I am wearing a suit.

The point is, there are elements of the various state governments, some federal agencies, the media, and one of the two major political parties that are scaring the crap out of people.

It is undeniable. Those elements WANT the citizenry terrified, and there is no doubt about it. To what end, many postulations have been made, ranging from trying to get Trump defeated to monetary gain from vaccine companies, and I am not sure which is most significant.

But I do know this is not the plague. 35% of the people who contract it are NOT going to die as a result of it. But we are fully acting as if the virus DID have that degree of mortality. Which seems insane to me.

And the weird PANIC that people have developed is disconcerting, to say the least. Not everyone, but I had an example a while back that astonished me-I was walking on a 6 foot wide bike trail, the weather was clear but very windy, perhaps 20 mph. I wore no mask, as I refuse to do when I am outdoors. A cyclist approached me, and as I watched, she began fumbling with her mask, her bike weaving, because she felt compelled for her protection (or perhaps to obey the unwritten laws that tell people like her to wear the mask at ALL times) to get that mask on her face.

Here we are, two people approaching, six feet apart, one of them (me) wearing no mask, mouth closed, not coughing, probably breathing through my nostrils, and her, coming the other way with no mask on, and a 25 mph wind between us.

I had to wryly remind myself that if either she or I became ill because of this brief encounter passing in a windstorm, because some persistent virus impossibly managed to land on she or I and infect us somehow...that I should hunt that virus down and shake its hand.

They have people so damned afraid that it is a bit frightening. What the Hell is going to happen if we have a REAL deadly virus infect people? What will THAT be like? (They won't need stupid rules or peer pressure to wear masks and quarantine, that is for sure)

Today, my wife and I went to one of the most Leftist locales on the East Coast. It is a long story of why we visited it, suffice to say we had nostalgic reasons for doing so. But as we walked into town, I began to see these signs:

They have people of all kinds, including many ostensibly intelligent people with panic in their eyes who feel the need to put up a plethora of these stupid signs. It is insane.

Does that giant full-body condom count as a mask?

Yep, some traditions are worth retaining.

And not this fist-bumping or elbow-touching BS either, if it can be avoided.

If it is Cholera or Bubonic Plague, sure. But not this.
