Students will no longer be graded based on a yearly average, or on how late they turn in assignments. Those are just some of the major grading changes approved this week by California's second-largest school district.
The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) is overhauling the way it grades students. Board members say the changes are part of a larger effort to combat racism... Academic grades will now focus on mastery of the material, not a yearly average, which board members say penalizes students who get a slow start, or who struggle at points throughout the year.
Another big change, teachers can no longer consider non-material factors when grading. Things like turning work in on time and classroom behavior will now instead count towards a student's citizenship grade, not their academic grade...

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Attendance! Now that’s Racist!
Because this is aggressively racist, I think the accent is on the first syllable.
This is actually how I “graded” my son & daughter who were home-schooled. I worked with them until they clearly understood the concepts and then we went on to the next level, not really dependent on yearly requirements, standardized tests, or typical public school class grades.
But ... I don’t think it’s going to be the same in the public school system (which I also worked in for a few years). Sounds more like a way to “pass through” underachievers, “slackers” or struggling students and not be penalized for teacher/administrator failure, esp with “less advantaged (privileged)” students.
“Mastery of material” is simply a way to make a final grade dependent on the teacher’s opinion. If you have the requisite skin color, you had better do well, or else teacher has to answer for teacher’s racism.

“Members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science found that just 16% considered American K-12 STEM education above average; 46% said it was below average.”
Yeah, just look at our students’ standing vs the world in STEM.
When I taught, I set my grading system up, so that a kid who made the effort to do the assigned work could pass (not get an A or B or even C, but pass) even if he got high Fs on tests. Some kids don’t do well on tests, some do. But I figured that real life is more like daily work and home work, rather than tests. I wanted my A students to have to work for their grade and I wanted to leave the door open for my not so bright ones.
The idea that work not handed in on time doesn’t lower a grade is absurd. I realize that doing things on time is a symptom of ‘whiteness’ and the mañana attitude comes from another culture that is just as good, if not better than ours (/s), but doesn’t finishing projects on time count for a lot in the ‘real world’.
And then there are the mastery tests (can they be called that?). You know that any test that shows one or two identifiable populations consistently passing and another couple consistently failing will be instantly deemed as racist and modified until the desired results are obtained.
Yeah, I know. It was just a whim.
And you thought our current ruling class was bad.

How is this going to help black people be more competitive in the job market?
Upside down world....everything reads like the Babylon Bee.
We need more Lacey!
Or just hand minority students a diploma and send them on their way. Why bother with this expensive charade?
This will not help any minority at all. They will not be able to get a job or hold one for very long but the school records will have glowing records of success.
Reality will bite that student while the school admins and teachers get bonus money. Incompetence is rewarded in gov’t.
If your child is a POC/female/sexually-befuddled, my condolences.
Little is more damaging to a child that being constantly told that they are, although discriminated against, a superior type of human being.
We see the results in every riot: self-righteous POC's and self-loathing Whites.
