In reviewing Kamala Harris's performance in Wednesday night's debate, two thoughts occurred to President Donald Trump.
"Totally unlikable," he said during an interview on Fox Business. He also called her "a monster" - twice.
Trump, who has never been big on reading, is probably unaware of the historical roots of his likability and monster critiques.
To historians who study women in politics, it was obvious.
"Likability among male politicians is pretty exclusive," said Claire Bond Potter, a professor of history at the New School and the author of a book on political engagement. "This is part of a bigger problem that women have - a permanent outsider status in politics. They are always in the process of gaining entry."
One of the ways to deny women entry is to deny anyone would want to be around them in the first place. The suffragists felt this wrath. So did Hillary Clinton. And now Harris is, too.
The code words are everywhere.
"One of the things that a man has to do to become likable is to be perceived as the kind of guy you want to have a beer with," Potter said, referring to a phrase that was often used to describe Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and John McCain. "You know, it's very rare that one imagines getting to know a woman over a beer. And you never hear anybody say that he's the kind of guy you'd like to sit down over a glass of wine with, right?"
Trump and other male politicians know how to tap into that history of misogyny.
"These ideas are woven through society and really always have been," said Allison K. Lange, a professor of history at Wentworth Institute of Technology and the author of "Picturing Political Power: Images in the Women's Suffrage Movement."

She wouldnt be treated like a lying bitch whore if she didnt act like a lying bitch whore!
I bet michael rosenwald is an unlikeable chick.
It’s not our fault that Democrats are awash in unlikeable women. Don’t think much of the men either.
There are some of course who are unlikable. Kamala is one of them and no amount of "shaming" is going to make me like her. Sorry.
That's just the way it is.
Creepy is the word you were looking for. Smile...
I hear ya.
Yet so strangely appropriate for smirking, sneering Kamala.
Candace Owens is likeable.
I didn’t see the debate but it sounds like she didn’t do well.
An article like this...confirms it.
Lolololol! “Kamala Harris with Cory Booker”!
During the 2016 election cycle, I was suddenly struck by the notion that Hitlery was a harridan.
I have no idea frOM where I conjured up the word harridan; it just showed up one day in my mind whislt contemplating Hitlery and the damage she has done to the USA, and would do if elected POTUS!
Merriam Webster defines harridan as an an angry and unpleasant woman: shrew.
So, I began to call her that every time I had cause to comment.
Then, certain character traits began to stand out, and the words noxious and venomous came to mind.
Once again, we turn to Merriam Webster:
noxious = physically harmful or destructive to living beings;
venomous = expressing very strong hatred or anger
harridan = an angry and unpleasant woman: shrew.
AHA! Hitlery is a noxious, venomous harridan!
A bit redundant, perhaps, but certainly appropriate in Hitlerys character and conduct.
Noxious, venomous harridan, now that I give it more thought, applies to most EVERY LIEberal/Socialist/Marxist/Fascist/Communist Democrat woman we poor suffering Normal Americans have doing unto us before we can do unto them!
So, transfer the noxious, venomous harridan appellation to Ms. Harris. She certainly qualifies!
In addtion, she is a LIEberal, and she is unlikeable to the MAX!
GREAT CHOICE, DEMOCRATS!
THANKS!
He could have called her a more polite term-harpie.
How many have said they dont like Trump?
Even her own father, who she hasn’t mentioned at all during the campaign, is not fond of his daughter.
She’s making Hillary look warm and sweet
The lefties had no problem branding Sarah Palin in extremely negative terms, including but not limited to unlikable.
From what I hear, she’s very likable. Lots of men have “liked” her.
That’s funny I remember when Sarah Palin was running and how the commie media called her an idiot, unqualified, went after her family, hacked in to her email account, accused her daughter of being the mother of baby Trig..calling her baby son a retard, etc etc etc etc etc
“You know, it’s very rare that one imagines getting to know a woman over a beer.”
In a bar in Toledo
Across from the depot
On a barstool she took off her ring
I thought I’d get closer
So I walked on over
I sat down and asked her, her name
When the drinks finally hit her
She said, “I’m no quitter”
But I finally quit livin’ on dreams....
Guys can imagine getting to know a gal over a beer. They just don’t want to get to know a bitch over a beer. Particularly a smug, man-hating, condescending, ‘I’m too good for men unless you are rich’ bitch. Like Kamala.
The biggest complaint I hear about President Trump is that he’s arrogant, a d*ck, unpresidential, blunt, and not likeable. Even from people who agree with his policies.
So what’s the problem?
