A good friend of mine works at a hospital spending much time in ER or OR. She, as anyone with at least 2 communicating brain cells, is adamant that 90% of face masks are useless. They have no ability to stop a germ from entering.

Unless the mask is a form-fitted mask, such as a 3M N95 mask, it is useless except as a weird sort of security blanket. With all cloth masks, there are massive gaps between the mask and the face and cotton produces almost no filtering effect.

You would never wear a cotton mask to spray paint, and spray-paint aerosol is a gigantic particulate compared to a virus.
