President Donald Trump made a series of promises at a campaign event in Atlanta on Friday in a bid to woo Black voters, including establishing Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of U.S. slavery, as a federal holiday.
Trump, who announced the promises less than 40 days before the November presidential election, also pledged to designate two groups as terrorist organizations: the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan and the amorphous movement known as antifa that opposes fascism. He also promised to increase access to capital in Black communities, create more jobs, support Black-owned businesses and expanding opportunity zones.
Trump said he "will always put Americans first and that includes very, very importantly Black Americans." He spoke at an event in Atlanta, a majority-Black city and the largest in Georgia, a state that could come into play in the Nov. 3 election.
The speech and a fact sheet provided by Trump's campaign did not spell out how Trump would make good on his promises.
Only Congress has the power to create a federal holiday, but Trump could help introduce a measure for lawmakers to pass.
Calls to make Juneteenth, June 19, a federal holiday grew louder this summer as Black Lives Matter protests swept through the country and many organizations gave their workers the day off. The day is already recognized by 47 states and the District of Columbia. It marks when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and shared the news that slavery was abolished.
Hawaii, North Dakota and South Dakota do not have a holiday or other official observance of Juneteenth.
Trump is trailinng Democratic opponent Joe Biden in national polling. He won Georgia in 2016, but his lead over Biden in the state has recently narrowed, with a New York Times poll this week showing the candidates in a...

They have enough free ponies. No more holidays to celebrate their skin pigmentation and half trillion Platinum program boondoggle to buy them. Leave that to the Democrats. You’ll never be able to outbid the Dems.
Taxation of labor is slavery.
Slavery has not been abolished.
Im a farmer I dont get holidays
Hey what is another $600 million! Fed printer goes “Brrrrrrrrrrr”. Am OK with it IF they eliminate 1 or 2 federal holidays for every one they add.
Stop pandering to minority voters. They don’t matter if you can’t secure the white vote.
I disagree.
Jay Powell is ready to rock!! https://youtu.be/O1hCLBTD5RM
And they say every month is white history month.
How about april 14th, the day the tyrant was killed. It was too late to save the nation. 600000 casualties had aready occured, but he was dead.
Uhhh. Nah, not a real holiday.
Bad idea. We have enough federal holidays as it is and stop with the pandering.
Well, when I pass by food stamp outlets I see lines of blacks celebrating their holiday.
Definitely a bad move. Its pandering and the optics will not resound well with his original supporters. Most are sick to death of politicians playing up to different demographic groups just to get that voting block. It’s got a snake oil salesman feel to it.
Juneteenth is a White holiday. It is an acknowledgement of the fact that white Americans did the right thing and gave freedom to those who did not have the power to win it for themselves.
If Blacks want to celebrate that, I see it as a giant “thank you” day.
I am ok with this too
Kwanzaa fizzled,
at a minimum it takes it from the Democommies.

Read post #26,
It convinced me.
One might think it would be on the day of the Emancipation.
I am not sure who is more stupid...the people who think this is a good idea, or the people who believe this is when the slaves were emancipated.
Do we ALL have to bow down to these people?
I was much quicker when I had a desk top set up way back when (Pre Obama Care).
