On Friday, our nation lost a historic Supreme Court Justice: Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was a brilliant justice, a legendary advocate, a careful lawyer, and, as only the second woman to ever serve on the Supreme Court, a trailblazer. She led an extraordinary life that shaped the lives of others and she leaves behind her an extraordinary legacy.
Much like the news in 2016 of the great Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalias passing during an election year, Fridays news was instantaneously followed by the question of when to fill the vacancy that now stands on the Court.
Heres why President Trump must nominate a successor next week and why the Senate must confirm that successor before Election Day:

Damned by faint praise...
Name one Dem you think might vote for a Trump nominee.”
IF the R’s already have a lock on the votes. Jones and Peters.
This is why I think Trump goes with the Florida Cuban woman.
Itd be racist and sexist to oppose her and Florida is always tight. Thats a trifecta win for Trump.
Ever heard of damned by faint praise?
My thoughts exactly upon reading the opening paragraph. Bleh!
The pearl clutcher club...
I should add that it only applies if the vote is before the election.
He gets them from whence the monkeys fly.
Concur.
Yep. He never responded where his monkey fly numbers came from.
He is probably a Romneyite
No, not kidding. Effective conservatism isn’t speaking ill of a dead woman - that’s why Trump isn’t doing it either. Effective conservatism is getting a real conservative in to replace Ginburg, which is what Trump will get done with the help of guys like Cruz who put principle over feelings.
As I understand it Collins has said that she does not think there should be a vote. She has not indicated how she would vote if McConnell holds one.
I’m late into the news today - who is the other Senator?
Murkowsiki, Alaska
I respect Cruz for the same reasons also and respect the long standing human tradition to not speak ill of the dead.
I do not respect Ginsburg and her personal attempt to stack the Supreme Court.
They call Rutabaga only the second woman to ever serve on the Supreme Court.
How long ago was this article written? And what else is wrong with it?
I read her statment and it appears she is saying the same thing. I’m not an expert here but if McConnell holds a vote I think they will have to participate even if it is abstaining.
“I respect Cruz for the same reasons also and respect the long standing human tradition to not speak ill of the dead.”
I agree. I was taught to always speak good of the dead.
She’s dead...good.
The idea that we must obey any "dying wish" about the new justice is laughable. The Supreme Court serves the people of the USA. The seat is not RBG's personal property, she does not have any say in the matter.
I am counting on Senator McConnell to get the appointment through, he has done a great job so far. Here is a meme from thedonald.win
“Not enough time for one”
One particular nominee was confirmed in 19 days. They only need 50 yes votes. Pence would break the tie.
“Will any politician speak truth to the lies?”
It would serve absolutely no use in trashing her career, would be a complete distraction from the upcoming fight, and would be used to play the sympathy card for her and no telling what kind of negative spin for conservatives. History will take care of her.
