The death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg gives Republicans the chance to do the right thing. For a president up for reelection in just six weeks, the right thing to do would be to hold off.
Its widely assumed that the president will soon announce a nominee and urge quick Senate action. But if Trump and his advisers are focused on his reelection, the shrewd choice would be to do the opposite.
What would he gain from this option? First, he would avoid a ferocious battle in the Senate that would most likely jeopardize several incumbent Republicans. Second, he would avoid branding himself and his party as the rankest of hypocrites. Instead, he would look almost statesmanlike.
He would also give his supporters and particularly anti-abortion voters a powerful motive to turn out on Election Day. Trump would avoid the risk of needlessly alienating those suburban women who are still undecided.
Some Republican senators must be praying to be spared a vote before Election Day. Given how Mitch McConnell quashed Merrick Garlands nomination, leaving a vacancy unfilled for 14 months, those questions would be brutally hard to answer.
Trump also has to consider the possibility of a humiliating rejection of his nominee, something that would require the defection of just four GOP senators. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska had already said she would not vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee before Inauguration Day. Can Trump count on Mitt Romney?
Several GOP incumbents on the ballot this year are trailing in the polls, including Susan Collins, Cory Gardner, Martha McSally and Thom Tillis. If Trump submits a nomination, will they really want to shackle themselves to a president who appears to be headed for defeat?

...wrong.
The Rats and Rinos will drag the nomination process on until spring 2021.
No, no, just please, please, please, please...
This is akin to SS guards giving advice to prisoners entering the death camp.
Ya, cuz the Dems would wait if the tables were reversed........
I think it might actually make sense. The den base is demoralised and unsinspired by Biden whereas the conservative base is already motivated. The last thing Trump needs is to stir the Bernie bros and other disgruntled dems into turning out to stop Trump being able to appoint a SC justice they consider inflammatory. Now is the time to slowly bring the pot to the boil, not the flash fryer.
Yeah...we wouldn’t want to make democrats made...
This is exactly what the Left wants. How damn dumb do they think we are?
Yeah...we wouldn’t want to make democrats mad...
What he advises is what a chump would do. Trump is not a chump.
We just all know when Demwits give friendly advice to Republicans, they are desperate. Trying all types of tactics to find anything that will work. Sorry Dems. President Trump doesn’t give a rat’s ass what you think and neither do we!
Calls himself libertarian on his Twitter bio yet supports Biden. A very confused individual.
Let’s see . . . what would the Rats do if they were in this situation in the position the GOP is in???????
I figure we would have a nominee by the end of the day. . . .
If Trump and the GOP follow this advice, they all deserve to lose in November.
How about this. Tell Biden to put forward his list now. If he refuses nominate and say Biden wasn’t willing to be transparent and you can’t afford a radical to replace a great justice. If he puts out a list nominate someone and say your list is too radical. If you want me to hold put out a new list...and so on.
On the other hand, seating Ginsburgs replacement takes the Supreme Court off the table as a campaign issue. None of the other justices look like they are going anywhere soon. I think the libs may be mad, but hopefully less motivated to vote.
Hey Chicago trib:
ESAD.
Seriously, you absurdly incorrect.
A hearing will tie up everyone in the news trying to outs Trump.
It will showcase again why people vote for him, while the Democrats can only do more ugly tactics like they did for Kavenaugh, that didn’t go over well last time. Sorry, you’re wrong. A fight is exactly what Trump needs.
Get it over and done with and those Dems won’t have that as an issue in 2020. Whereas it is an issue the longer it remains unsettled.
