Mayors Vow to Launch Guaranteed Income Programs Across US

A growing number of mayors across the country support giving cash to low-income families with no restrictions on how they can spend it — part of a growing movement to establish a guaranteed minimum income to combat poverty and systemic racism.

Mayors in at least 25 cities — from Los Angeles to Paterson, New Jersey — have pledged to support such programs as part of the group Mayors for a Guaranteed Income. They are led by Michael Tubbs, the 30-year-old mayor of Stockton, California, who launched one of the country's first guaranteed income programs last year with the help of private donations from Silicon Valley.

The idea of guaranteed income programs has been around for decades, but it got a lot of attention in the U.S. as the centerpiece of Andrew Yang's failed bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

Critics have scoffed at Yang's plan, which would have cost $2.8 trillion a year while giving every American $1,000 a month. Pilot programs launching in some cities across the country are covering just a few hundred people at most. The goal, Tubbs said, is to convince the federal government to launch a guaranteed income program by providing “the stories and the cover to do what is right.”

“It has to be a federal solution,” he said Wednesday. “We understand that a guaranteed income is not a panacea for everything (but) is a powerful tool that provides a floor for everyone."

Yes, because the Feds are the only ones who can issue massive debt, which is then monetized by the Federal Reserve with printed money.

Its why America needs a gold-backed currency. Politicians (and citizens voting for them). can not be trusted create massive debt, to spend, and to print money.

“Stockton’s program began in early 2019, giving $500 a month to 125 people. It was supposed to end in August, but Tubbs extended it through January because of the pandemic.”

125 people in a city of over 300,000. Wonder what you have to do to get one of those slots!

Absolutely not.

The Founders guaranteed the “pursuit of happiness,” not happiness itself.

Nor does any document, the Declaration or the Constitution, guarantee income. Pursue the making of money all you want, but your neighbors don’t have to pay for it.

I love it when we quote the Constitution like it still means something. Lawless judge and corrupt politicians have negated so much of the Constitution that I doubt it really matters anymore. Unless we figure a way to elect real patriots to higher offices and I don't see that happening any time soon, certainly not in my lifetime, then our children will live under a dictatorial government.

Don’t we have a “floor for everyone” already, in that, we have various public assistance programs, to assist those in poverty? I’m assuming that this guaranteed income would not replace any of the existing programs, but would be in addition to, and over and above, all of the public assistance currently given to recipients.

Can see LOTS of people moving to the cities and in case you are wondering where to put them, they will be able to live in all the EMPTY business and offices as surely the PAYERS will move to the suburbs as the new tax rise will be to fund this hairbrained scheme.

I am at ‘odds’ about Seattle and its ‘special’ tax that is aimed at Amazon etal ... what better incentive to ‘force’ your hand and move.

The more these so called ‘leaders’ open their mouths the dumber WE all seem as someone had to vote these SchiffBirds into office.

Not exactly. Communism is where EVERYBODY works (In a job that the Government tells you to do), nobody owns a house and the Government ALLOWS you to live in a Government Apartment, with many of your friends and neighbors. Even in Socialist Britain, the Government Local Councils own many terraced homes and rent them out. They are known as Council houses.

Various tests have been done in Europe over the past five years. The Finland experiment was the most recent. They admitted the anticipated results...were never met. I think there’s a 18-month German test program about to start by private think-tank.

Each of these had the objective that with extra money, you improved your life, or your job-potential...on your own. In each case, they’ve failed to provide ‘coaching’ on how to effectively spend the money or spend more wisely. Until you accomplish some kind of coaching program, this idea of guaranteed income is a total waste.
