This is the era of expecting the worst while hoping for the merely tolerable. Some might say that the worst is already happeningeconomic disaster and 190,000 dead from a pandemicwhile the president and his surrogates insist, in a feat of self-delusion, that the best is yet to come. As someone who has argued against catastrophismI dont believe Donald Trump is a fascist or a dictator in the making, and I dont believe America is a failed stateI find myself truly worried about only one scenario: that Trump will win reelection and Democrats and others on the left will be unwilling, even unable, to accept the result.
A loss by Joe Biden under these circumstances is the worst case not because Trump will destroy America (he cant), but because it is the outcome most likely to undermine faith in democracy, resulting in more of the social unrest and street battles that cities including Portland, Oregon, and Seattle have seen in recent months. For this reason, strictly law-and-order Republicans who have responded in dismay to scenes of rioting and looting have an interest in Biden winningeven if they could never bring themselves to vote for him.
In presidential elections, once is a fluke; twice is a pattern. I struggle to imagine how, beyond utter shock, millions of Democrats will process a Trump victory. A loss for Biden, after having been the clear favorite all summer, would provoke mass disillusion with electoral politics as a means of changeat a time when disillusion is already dangerously high. If Democrats cant beat a candidate as unpopular as Trump during a devastating pandemic and a massive economic contraction, then are they even capable of winning presidential elections anymore? Democracy, after all, is supposed to self-correct after mistakes, particularly mistakes as egregious as electing Donald Trump...

Or Else!
Do they give an award for Gaslighting of the Year? Cause this article would be a shoo-in.
If the country is a democracy, Democrats should win 100% of all elections — because they are the party of the rampaging mob.
If the country is a republic, Republicans should win 100% of all elections — because we are the party of the Rule of Law, not men.
Trump-538. Rip van byeDUHn-0. Hildabeast advice——NEVER concede!
No kidding!
Nice country you have there, be a shame if something happened to it.........
Democrats did not accept Trump’s win in 2016.
Not a bigger deal if they don’t accept his win in 2020.
I read this article this morning. Actually a good article. You can feel the fear in them. They know Trump’s going to get reelected, as most incumbent presidents do.
1917 Russia: Support the Bolsheviks and Lenin and the violence will stop!
This means WAR....
Wow, this is how Hitler came to power. They convinced Hindenburg to make Hitler the Premier in order to appease his people. We are reenacting 1930 Germany. This is why we need to teach real history.
Should they want to take it to the next level, So Be It.
Gaslighting to Infinity and Beyond by demonrats is what has created the scenario they say they NOW fear. They might as well have said, “In order to save Democracy, we have to destroy Democracy.” They still have not accepted that Trump won in 2016, so the only way he can win in 2020 is by fraud. Their TDS is off the scale to such as extent that it is obvious they are mentally ill with paranoid delusion. This is fueling their ONLY solution....anarchy and mob rule. They are truly dangerous.
I bought that magazine.
Darned, we’re all so old...

When, we think that the Atlantic can’t sink any lower, they surprise us and come out with OPEDS like this.
Their private polling and Focus groups must be showing a massive wipeout by President Trump over Joe Dementia.
They will be forced to concede if all of Biden’s voters switch to Trump. Then, Democrat governors will put down the rioters the next day.
Yes but we had the funny magazines!
Looked forward to buying NL every month for years.
