Sunbury officials and Shikellamy school leaders are saying they are not concerned with an email from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association telling them to follow Gov. Tom Wolfs recommendation of no more than 250 people at outdoor gatherings.
The email from PIAA executive director Robert Lombardi was forwarded to Shikellamy board members by Superintendent Jason Bendle on Thursday ahead of a vote to allow 500 fans inside the stadium for the Sept. 18 home opener.
Shikellamy school director Jenna Eister-Whitaker said the board read Lombardis email prior to Thursdays vote. They voted 9-0 to allow 500 fans contingent on a letter of support from City Council, which takes its vote on the letter Monday.
I received the email and read it and still think I did what was best for our parents and families in our community, Eister-Whitaker said.
In the email, Lombardi asked all districts to remind their schools to keep working through the legislative process if they wanted change, which is where Eister-Whitaker and City Councilman Josh Brosious questioned the PIAA.
PIAA fails to remember they are the ones that initially got the ball rolling for fall sports. They wanted sports even though Gov. Wolf recommended there shouldnt be any sports until 2021, Eister-Whitaker said. But PIAA met and said they were going to play anyway. Now they are back-peddling and want to play by the rules. Again, in the end, my concern is for the Shikellamy School District and its families. And having parents at these games is important to our kids.
I find it very disappointing what PIAA is trying to do to parents and athletes, board member Josh Brosius said. It originally went against Gov. Wolfs recommendation about playing sports and took a stand for the athletes and parents across the state. Now it is going against the people it is supposed to be serving. I will continue to support letting fans attend athletic events in a safe matter keeping social distancing with a mask. The parents have a right to see their kids compete and know they are safe. The athletes have a right to have their family in the stands to cheer them on and make memories that will last a lifetime.
City Councilman Jim Eister said he will back the decisions of the school district and he will the district.
Parents of these children deserve and have the right to go and see their children play, cheerlead or perform in the band, Eister said. Im not even sure why we are still talking about this.

If the people lead, the leaders will eventually, reluctantly follow...
Just say No to progressives.
Anecdotal observance from here in Bucks County PA — seems that most people have had enough of the stupid mask and all the other crap rules.
Went walking in 2 different local parks today. 1st park — lots of kids on the playground equipment (some local moms tore down the caution tapes a few weeks ago) and parents watching them - NO masks, semi-social distancing. Also 3 or 4 softball/baseball teams warming up - no masks seen, and parents/coaches were standing right next to each other.
On the walking trail — passed at least 2 dozen different people/groups. Total of 3 of them wearing masks.
2nd park, same as the first, a few mask wearers on the trails but very small percentage. We did put our masks on to enter the exhibit building. Then went to the small nature/bird/butterfly garden - 2 people with masks, no one else among at least 15 - 20 people.
People here are wearing masks when absolutely required, but I think the majority knows it’s all Kabuki theater at this point. They want to get back to life — and that’s NOT the “new normal” mask crap
Good for them!!!
