US Postal Service Has What It Needs For the Election…If It Can Just Get Out Of Its Own Way

The hyperbolic claims about whether or not the U.S. Postal Service is prepared for the upcoming November election have reached astounding proportions. In the midst of all the political theater in Washington, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy sought to clear the air by communicating a few obviously realities about the USPS.

In the short term, the Postal Service is fully equipped to handle the nation’s election mail, and that it has a fully stocked coffer of cash to deploy if the situation demands it. In the long-term however, DeJoy has been mindful of the existential crisis facing the Postal Service with its immense recurring debts and growing competitive eCommerce pressures that erode the fabric of the institution from the inside out. After all the work in the months ahead to effectively serve voters, the Postal Service will have to look inward at its delivery management given that this federal government agency has been routinely identified as a “High-Risk” entity according to the Government Accountability Office.

Since the early 2000s, as the GAO decries “a bleak financial outlook that put its mission of providing universal postal service at risk.” To help resolve this DeJoy is applying his expertise in the logistics field with a number of efficiency fixes, which in the years to come will reinvigorate the Postal Service’s business sensibilities and bring “clarity and economies of scale that will allow us to reduce our cost base and capture new revenue.”

If the Postal Service wants to go one better, they can do this: set up a similar collection "lane", accept the ballot, and insert into a sealed metal container clearly marked "Ballots".

But
we
are
too
lazy
too
even
leave
our
houses!

This was all new to me and I found it interesting and sensible.

Then it all gets into the hands of 12 Angry Men (or it's equivalent)

The jury I served on was APPALLING in it's wanting to base a verdict on experiences each of the members had; instead of the preponderance of evidence.

It was like pulling teeth to get rational thought from so many of them!

Why are we flooding the postal service with “mail in ballots”. This has never happened before and sets a dangerous precedent.

This was a murder trial, and it was a pretty easy decision to convict. The physical evidence matched up with the testimonies of the two people who were there when the murder happened. When it was time to deliberate, we just went back over what we had and made a decision. No arguments. The victim was shot to pieces and the defendant was the only one who could have done it. The jurors all seemed like reasonable people.

USPS OVERTIME SCAMS BILK TAXPAYERS BIGTIME

“A mail handler earned $141,153 in total overtime pay by working 3,329 regular overtime hours,
resulting in a tax-paid paycheck of $205,018 in total pay.

“This was equivalent to more than three times the amount of this employee’s base salary.”

This amount of overtime would have required this employee to work an average of 17-hour days,
consisting of eight regular work-hours and about nine overtime hours every day for 365 days a year.

Mine was an abduction, theft, bodily harm and rape. (Black on black)

Young lady was going to work in the morning, when a young man pulled a gun on her in her apartment parking lot, made her drive to a remote location.

He hid in the backseat and the gun went off, going thru the seat back into her back, causing minor injury. He then raped her and fled in her car; leaving her behind.

She made it to the highway and flagged down help.

At the hospital she was treated for the bullet wound and the rape. She was able, using the police artist; to describe in such detail that the perp was arrested quite quickly; as he was already known to police.

Her car was found not far from his home, his prints were in the car, his DNA was a match from his semen.

At the trial; the defendant no longer looked like the afro haired man in the sketch; but a college student, complete with a preppy outfit to wear.

Seemed open and shut to me; but the women in the jury had a quite different view.

They considered it a good possibility that it was a relationship gone bad and argued from that stand.

after all was said and done; the theft part was the hardest; for there was NO evidence of the jewelry or money he took from her. If we hung at this point; this fella was gonna be back out on the street.

We had to agree that the prosecutor should have had SEPARATE charges instead of lumping them all together, but since we finally agreed to the guilt on all the rest, we’d also call GUILTY on the theft; the least of the charges.

After the trial; and as we were gathered in the jury delibration room to go; the attorney for the State came in and thanked us for our time, our effort and our verdict.

“I can now reveal to you things that were NOT allowed into the courtroom.”

Turns out this dude was a REALLY bad actor and had slipped on many things in the past. He was now going to be put away for a really long time.

We never considered motive. It never came up in the trial, and we didn’t speculate. The shooter, his brother, the victim, and a friend were up late at night drinking and perhaps smoking some kind of enhanced pot, and playing video games. The shooter might have been strung out on something. We had no evidence of that, though, and the prosecutor reminded us that being high isn’t a defense.

Our defendant was cleaned up too. He looked like a retail manager.

After the trial, I went online for any other information. Wow. The shooter had been wanted for attempted murder in a shooting that happened during a drug deal about a month before this murder. He had a brother who killed himself in 2015 after a shootout with the feds after a drug sting. I remember that one from the news. The shooter’s brother who was a witness to the murder has done time for drug trafficking and now is scheduled to stand trial for attempted murder after he shot a guy during an argument over money and booze.

The victim had another brother who was gunned down about a year ago. I don’t know the details.

According to the interview the shooter’s brother gave the police, the shooter and the victim talked that night about planning a robbery. I came away from this experience confident that it was inevitable that these two were going to cause something bad to happen, or something bad was going to happen to them. Well, one is in the grave and the other threw his own life away, so there you go.

My two best mail stories:

Certified letter I was mailing I think to the Securities and Exchange Commission took 3 1/2 months to get from NY to DC.

And once my then-gf mailed me her dorm keys from upstate NY to downstate NY so I could pick something up from her dorm as I passed by on my way upstate. A month and a half later they showed up (after paying to replace them) with a postmark of Des Moines.
