The Republicans have now forced the Democrats to change course and tactics, shed their narcissistic complacency, and recognize that they are in the fight of their lives.
snip. . .
Without the election of Lincoln in 1860 the country would have broken up, and without the reelection of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940, Britain and Canada would have had to make peace with Germany and leave Hitler in control of most of Europe.

We have people in this country who still pray to Zeus, not even mentioning the ones who practice witchcraft. The number of people who believe the Emperor is divine is small compared to the number of Japanese who are areligious.

If it were so, no jinja would be in operation.
Japanese media still is saturated with their mythology, whether it be yokai, oni, yoma or other monsters, including the divine personages that keep them in their place. They aren’t areligious socialists, as dangerous as that is in and of itself.

I lived there for years and have family there. They have superstitions that originated long ago, like the belief that foxes can bewitch you. There is still a festival to pacify the Tengu, but nobody believes they live in the mountains and teach swordsmanship. Tengu are more widely known in Japan amongst young people as a Manga character. We have similar beliefs and customs that have long ago lost their meaning. We have superstitions that our fore bearers believed to be fact. Don't step on a crack, don't spill salt etc.... Even our western religious practices have a lot of folklore attached to them.

Agreed.
Prior to that the worst president was Buchanan, the gay president and the only one from Pennsylvania.

Johnson was a bastard and would have found a compatriot in Pelosi. He was a bad President because he was only concerned with power and prestige. He was a micro-manager from hell. Not to mention a hard core racist.
Carter was a decent man for the most part, with some good intentions, anecdotally there are suggestions he was not the Mr. Rogers type he was portrayed as. Carter was only electable because Ford was tied to Nixon and everyone wanted Nixon in our rear view mirror. Carter was not stupid or slow, he would never have been on Rickover's team if he was. To some degree he was a competent manager. Carter has over time become a bitter man in my opinion. He is still looking for legacy long after he left the Oval Office.
