The New York Sun ^ | 29 August 2020 | Conrad Black

Posted on 08/29/2020 11:46:28 PM PDT by lowbuck

The Republicans have now forced the Democrats to change course and tactics, shed their narcissistic complacency, and recognize that they are in the fight of their lives.

snip. . .

Without the election of Lincoln in 1860 the country would have broken up, and without the reelection of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940, Britain and Canada would have had to make peace with Germany and leave Hitler in control of most of Europe.

A good summation of current events as regards the election. Well worth the five minutes to read.

Oh, please. Roosevelt waited until we lost some 3,000 lives in Hawaii before he got off the pot.

We had 4 major wars in the 20th century. All were caused by second term democrats and their appeasement policies.

Wilson.. WWI

FDR.... WWII

Truman.. Korea

Hohnson... Vietnam

I will give FDR (and Churchill) credit for one thing. Before WW II, most international wars were fought this way: Great armies would maneuver for a few years. Then there would be a negotiated peace. Someone would lose a few provinces, and someone would gain a few provinces. WW I is a good example of that.

But FDR and Churchill would have none of it. Hitter and Tojo had to go, along with their whole rotten belief structures.

I just wish George W. Bush had that same resolve with respect to radical Islam.

Surprised no mention of Reagan.

He weathered a tough recession early in his first term and led the country to a recovery so solid he won 49 out of 50 states for re-election. I’d call that a very successful first term. And IMO Reagan’s second term was even more successful than his first.

He would’ve gotten us in even earlier if he had his way. The overwhelming majority of the country did NOT want us getting involved in a European war before Pearl Harbor. They remembered what the last one was like.

Certainly the most important election since 1860 in my mind. An excellent article, thanks for sharing!

The job was left unfinished in both Europe and Japan, though. Adenauer was allowed to rebuild West Germany with “former” Nazis populating the Bonn government, and Japan kept their Shinto belief structure intact with a sizable majority still believing that the emperor was a living god even though he declared himself to be human under duress. Meanwhile, what does West Germany set about doing? Creating the beginnings of the EU, and a united Europe was what Kaiser Wilhelm wanted “against America”. Over in Japan, there is Nippon Kaigi, who are basically Shinto revanchists who wouldn’t hesitate to elevate the new emperor Naruhito to the status of a god.

Good question. As I see it, this is not a war of territory, but of ideas. And George W. Bush set the tone when just after 9/11 he said “Islam is peace”.

We lost the war of ideas right there! We needed a verbal Patton. Perhaps Rudy Giuliani would have fit the bill. We needed someone to say, and keep repeating: “Every last hijacker on 9/11 was a Muslim. Islam needs to drastically reform, or be shunned by the world.”

That might have flown, given the outrage after 9/11. But instead we were told “Islam is peace.”

Democrats have no ‘direction’ but down and out. It’s time for them to go. We’ve had quite enough of them and their filthy corrupt swamp.

"But instead we were told “Islam is peace.”"

One of the most blasphemous and demonstrably false statements ever uttered in history.

FDR had130 land divisions, 2500 ships, unlimited industrial power, and a declaration of war promising the defeat of the attacker,

Bush had 12 divisions, 260 ships, inability to produce war materiel in volume, and no declaration of war, and he pursued friendly relations with the attackers (Saudi Arabia and Pakistan) while attacking two states (Afghanistan and Iraq) that had nothing to do with it. Yes, 9/11 was planned in Afghanistan but it was also planned in Germany, why attack one and nit the other.

The two situations are not comparable.

Adenauer was allowed to rebuild West Germany with “former” Nazis populating the Bonn government,

Well, the decision was made in Washington (and London) that the ex-Nazis were among the most capable men in West Germany and if the country was to be a bulwark against communism it'd be pretty dumb to turn over the keys to anyone other than the most capable men. It was what it was. The Russians made an effort to put Germany's old pre-war communists in charge of the D.D.R., and while they certainly ran a fearsome Stasi and intelligence and Olympics operations, they were, like most Commies, pretty crappy at most everything else... especially economics.
