The seedy underbelly of LA was a real thing in the 1930s. I found it fascinating and the characters interesting. I had no idea how it would resolve itself.

It’s fine if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but the “they’re ruining everything!” reaction isn’t really justified here.

“BTW Perry Mason was in the Navy in World War II. According to the author who actually invented him.”

The first Perry Mason novels were written in the early 1930s.

So what? X-rated content is still x-rated content. If you want to depict certain events occurred to tell a story that can be done without actually graphically acting it out. To do otherwise just makes the show smut and is done just to be perverted rather than tell a story.

If it’s so good why don’t they just give it another another name so it stands on it own. It’s dishonest to leech off the Perry Mason name.

You can’t remake a classic. It doesn’t work...it NEVER works.

“Sounds about right for HBO to throw porn into everything”

Is the new Perry Mason series full of f-words and porny stuff?

I had a small role in the very last PERRY MASON. Those were fun years, here in Denver.

I watched the entire first season. It was VERY good!

A different perspective, so what? If I wanted the old Perry Mason I can still watch it today.

While I usually hate the insertion of homos in EVERY movie/show, it is ironic that the original Hamilton Burger (William Talman) and Perry Mason (Raymond Burr) were BOTH gay!

In this version Della Street and Hamilton Burger are gay. Perry Mason is not.

Some nudity (including male nudity), but I’m not offended by nudity. I’m “nude”, all night, every night.

This is in the new style/genre, if that’s the right word, as Yellowstone, Westworld, Game of Thrones, and Outlander.

All EXCELLENT in my view. While I could do without the foul language and gratuitous nudity (ALL nudity is not gratuitous or vulgar), I’m not a baby and I can handle it.

These shows are not for “snowflakes”. If you are easily offended best stick to Disney .... wait.....

That would explain the timing of this book release.

I agree. It was very good. Very dark, very “adult” but like you I can handle nudity and language if it makes sense for the story.

It is an origin story. In it Mason is a deeply damaged soul, damaged by his WWI experiences and a failed marriage, separated from his son. He drinks too much and has become very jaded. But yet there is an inkling of a sense of right and wrong and of wanting justice in him.

Matthew Rhys is perfect in the role as he was playing another deeply conflicted character in The Americans.

I’m with you. The series was very well done. These aren’t the first folks to re-imagine old standbys. I liked two TV versions of Nero Wolfe. I find that Spenser novels got pretty awful once Robert Parker died. Stacey Keach and Darren McGavin were both fine Mike Hammers.

As these things go, this Perry Mason was very good and I’m looking forward to season 2.

I’ve never watched it - just basing it on the comments above - and it is entirely believable based on how they handle all of their “original series.” They just throw porn into supposedly “mainstream” programming just to do it - I guess because they want mainstream viewers to be exposed to and desensitized to that kind of content.

Perry Mason was based on the novels by Earl Stanley Gardner.

His name was Erle Stanley Gardner.

It must be exhilarating to know everything without knowing anything.

There were a series of Perry Mason movies made between 1934 and 1937. They were not very faithful to the novels. As I recall Mason ran a huge law firm in San Francisco in the first one! Familiar aspects including characters like Tragg, Burger and even Drake were missing or much different. Don’t know about the later radio dramas but it’s my impression that the original TV show reset how the character was presented.

I’ve never seen the 1980s series starring Monte Markham but I guess it didn’t do too well.
