I tbought they were only limited to 1 or two.
“I thought they were only limited to 1 or two.”
The whole of China was under the One Child Policy, from 1979 to 2015.
The Left had the tragically mistaken belief that this would somehow be good for the economy - so they murdered untold millions of children.
Recently, it became clear that the smaller graduating classes every year, and the fewer new families establishing households was actually a very fundamental drag on GDP, they reversed the policy, in hopes of maintaining their centrally planned GDP growth rates (which Party elites were eager to milk and spend on themselves).
Uighurs, and some other minorities, have continued to be oppressed by the enforcement organs developed by the Government during the One Child period - in a deliberate attempt to drive down their numbers, while they systematically attempt to destroy their culture.
Because of Chinese culture, there is a strong preference to have a boy to carry on the family name, and perform the boy’s duties for burial of the parents, and maintenance of their graves (and make more money working). So even beyond the catastrophic demographic effects of simply limiting families to one child, the disproportionate killing of girls (who are much more important to future birth rates) is going to drag out the negative effects of that evil policy even longer.
There are also social effects, with millions of young men left out of the mating game, because of the shortage of women.
