What was he going for in the car? That don't matter a bit. What matters are the cops had no idea what he might have been going for. No idea at all. You can't allow a suspect to do that. They don't know. In many cases it turns out to be a gun and the cops get shot up. Of the suspect jumps in, starts the car, a huge pursuit follows and innocent people die on the highway.
