Water levels at China’s giant Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze river are inching closer to their maximum after torrential rains raised inflows to a record high, official data showed on Friday.
With 75,000 cubic metres per second of water flowing in from the Yangtze river on Thursday, the reservoir’s depths reached 165.6 metres by Friday morning, up more than 2 metres overnight and almost 20 metres higher than the official warning level.
The maximum designed depth of China’s largest reservoir is 175 metres.
Authorities raised the discharge volume to a record 48,800 cubic metres per second on Thursday to try to lower water levels, and they might have to increase it again to avoid the possibility of a dangerous overflow.
“They will do everything they can to prevent the dam from overtopping,” said Desiree Tullos, a professor at Oregon State University who studies the Three Gorges project.
“An overtopping dam is a worst-case scenario because it produces significant damage... and can lead to the entire thing collapsing.”
Rainfall in the Yangtze basin has been well over double the seasonal average this year.

In my view, the danger is in the five main upstream dams, controlled by the Three Gorges dam.
Built in conjunction with the 3G Dam.
A concrete arch dam, anchored in bedrock on the sides and bottom would most likely shrug off an over topping.
Three Gorges is a gravity dam, just resting on dirt. Would over topping scour out enough dirt out from under the downstream side to make it fail? Dunno.

That is a very good point. This is not the water rising in a fixed swimming pool - it is varied terrain. Before reaching 175, or 181 meters, the water might spill over into other areas upstream - maybe huge catchments will have to flood, before the water can get that high.

That’s 19,812,903 gallons per minute. A difference of 7,132,645 GPM or 36,678.77 acre feet per day.
I don’t think that they are going to keep up.

China has never been honest about numbers, either in export commodities, nor, in terms of the number of covid19 victims ;
for that reason, I trust Taiwan who has has more experience with China mainland honesty when it comes to diseases.

To my mind, that made their virus problem into a world-wide pandemic, and borders on bio-warfare, if not in fact.
Little wonder how they are now offering an as yet unproven vaccine to the world, to elevate their 'face' in the international community.
I still question their destruction of early medical documents, and the missing early detection physicians,
whereby their problem could have allowed medical communities to understand the disease much earlier.
To the best of my knowledge, as of this date, Chinese authorities have only produced only one of these physicians.
What happened to the others ?
Another possible scenario, is a cascade effect, caused by other dams failing, and sending big wave fronts downstream.
Yes, I think we know what happened to the other doctors.

Inflow has slowed from that peak, and is now under 60,000.
The water is still rising but more slowly, and is expected to peak on Sunday, after a few days of no rain.
Some amount of rain is forecast for Monday in Chongqing though.

IMHO, they became the slag floating on top of the steel being made in vast quantities near Wuhan when the crematoria were overwhelmed and all other industry was shut down.
If industry is shut down who is using all that steel, hmmmm?

In addition to those major modern dams, Mao went on a spree having people build thousands of earthen dams across China. Less water, but more of them. Some fail every season, somewhere or another. This year’s extra heavy stress should bust a few more than usual.
Coincidentally, the derecho hurricane winds destroyed much of the grain 'heartland' crops of corn and wheat.
But the Dept. of Agriculture says that we can still meet international demands from reserves.
See .. even the government practices 'prepping' !
The swine flu more than decimated the native pork population of China, affecting approximately 65-75% of young porker piglets .
Then again, can you trust the Chinese disease numbers (?).
Regardless, China pork production will be augmented by pork products grown in the USA; thus raising American pork prices.

Déjà vu ?
The Chinese are exploratory drilling in the Sea of Japan now, and they are expanding their use and construction of artificial islands for military usage.
Expansionism ? Colonialism ?
The larger their military, the more emboldened the Chinese become.
The flooding is bad on many accounts, and the dam itself is deforming. We know that it is bad, because their government allowed farmland at harvest time to be flooded to lower the water levels below where it was three and four years ago without any problems.
