California governor: Hundreds of wildfires blazing statewide

VACAVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Crews were battling wildfires in the San Francisco Bay Area and thousands of people were under orders to evacuate Wednesday as hundreds of wildfires blazed across the state amid a blistering heat wave now in its second week.

Gov. Gavin Newsom blamed “this extraordinary weather we’re experiencing and all of these lightning strikes” for 367 known fires, including 23 major fires or groups of fires. He said the state has recorded nearly 11,000 lightning strikes in 72 hours.

Police and firefighters went door-to-door before dawn Wednesday in a frantic scramble to warn residents to evacuate as fire encroached on Vacaville, a city of about 100,000 between San Francisco and Sacramento. At least 50 structures were destroyed, including some homes, and 50 damaged.

“This is an incredibly emotional and stressful time for most of us who’ve endured a number of wildfires over the last few years,” said Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick.

Ash and smoke filled the air over San Francisco, which is surrounded by wildfires burning in multiple counties to the north, east and south. The so-called LNU Lightning fire is made up of several fires burning in five counties north of San Francisco, including in Vacaville, and had consumed 72 square miles as of Wednesday morning (186 square kilometers).

Lightning strikes— 11,000 in the past three days, set a lot of fires in the dry timber and brush.

“They are scared”

Yep.

With this weather the whole state might go up in smoke.

Wind too.

An emergent disaster.

Californians love nature, so they should love nature’s cleansing and regrowth cycle.

As a lifelong Californian I can attest to this, however we have annual fires that burn hundreds of thousands of acres every year. Much of it is preventable if the state did it's job and cleared dead brush, but the environmentalist Marxists in control of the state decided that was distrubing the natural beauty and habitat of the land, so no more brush clearing. Ever since the fires have become worse each year. We lost an entire (small) city in 2019 due to this terrible policy that killed 85 people:

Northern California town of Paradise lost 90% of its population after Camp Fire, data shows.

We loaded my Ridgeline up as the go vehicle yesterday and put my wife’s Lexus in a spare driveway.

This morning the Lexus was covered with ashes.

Basically every nixle has to be decoded as to evacuations and possible evacuations.

Nixle is an alert system. They send out emergency messages for evac warnings and orders. I’m in NorCal and have been following since last night. There’s plenty of info available online from CalFire and Sheriffs. I have links to an evac map that’s very clear.

All that said, Newsome is worse than worthless and a corrupt scum. Liberal policies and spending on every social justice cause and illegals vs taking care of the damn infrastructure. How can anyone be surprised at the mess?

I think that's California state policy, although it may not be publicly stated.

Small towns in isolated places damage the environment and consume too many scarce state resources that could be better used buying votes to keep Sacramento politicians and bureaucrats in their cushy no-work jobs where they can run their mouths and go to receptions and hot-tub parties every day.

My area - halfway between Sacramento and Fresno - has very orange skies and smells of smoke outdoors. We’re right downwind of the Patterson/Canyon fires.

Living in N. California with floods, airquakes, fires and >>\???

The nixle messages for the past decade have been very clear and definitive re hunker down, get out Dodge or drop everything and run. Or the cops need help and are chasing bad guys in X area. Stay out of X area.

The nixles, during this bs are basically warnings but no specifics re high danger areas or need to evacuate. Now I have to go the local Office of Emergency Services (OES) site to try and see what is happening. Even, then we may have to wait 8 hours or so to see what is/might be happening.

We ran into this with Covid 19 warnings.

How do they know it’s not power lines touching trees starting those fires? All power statewide should be cut!

Jerry Brown claimed decades ago that suburbs were a drain on unnecessary energy and infrastructure costs and everyone should live in the major cities. He was also one of the first generation of environmentalist legislators in the state and helped to craft the anti-suburb narrative that they are the source of the majority of CO2 emissions in the state. All Marxist BS.

You guys are sweating out a bunch of fires, and I’m watching the Caribbean for the possibility of three storms back to back to back.
Ain’t summertime grand.

This last couple of days, storms.

Hundreds of lighting hits. It’s been very hot. It wouldn’t matter who was running the show, dry weather, extreme heat, lightening and very hard to reach places (most of what is burning is about as remote as you can get without going WAAAAY up north). is a killer combination.

I live in Sonoma County ‘wine country’. As much as I dislike a lot of what our local idiot politicians do, everyone has done everything they can to prepare and the blame goes more to Mother Nature than incompetence. This time.
