The Senate Intelligence Committee has sent a bipartisan letter to the Justice Department asking federal prosecutors to investigate Stephen K. Bannon, a former Trump confidante, for potentially lying to lawmakers during its investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
The letter, a copy of which was reviewed by The Times, was signed by the panels then-chairman, Republican Sen. Richard M. Burr, and its ranking Democrat, Sen. Mark Warner.

+1. Right on point.
Kiss a chance at flipping the courts goodbye if the Dems get Senate control.
Mother Nature will flip the courts as the oldest judges - who are the more liberal , dating from Clintons time - die off. If Trumps nominees dont get confirmed, leave the liberal seats empty
Sometimes the GOP has to lose elections to eventually make progress. Trump would not be our prez today if Freepers has gotten their way in 2012 and Romney had won. Instead, Romneys VP, Paul Ryan, would be running against Biden for president
By same token, if Romney-like Senators arent defeated , well never be able to regroup with a truly conservative Senate GOP.
Lying to Congress should be a civil right, because Congress is just a pack of liars.
Story needs more authors.
They're not accountable to anyone but their donors and special interests.
We have a top FBI lawyer about to plead guilty of falsifying documents in the Russia investigation, so the media dredge up this old story.
It can only be a story because Burr and his GOP colleagues signed the letter. The fat that they stuck a knife in the back of Bannon and the Trump family is something that deserves to be known. You may prefer to remain ignorant of the treachery of our GOP leaders, but I cant live my life in denial
"In the two page-letter, the committee raised concerns that testimony given to it by the presidents family and advisors contradicted what Rick Gates, the former deputy campaign chairman, told the Special Counsel about when people within the Trump campaign knew about a June 9 meeting at Trump tower with a Russian lawyer.
"When the meeting became public, Trump Jr. initially claimed it was about Russian adoptions, but emails written by Trump Jr. that were later made public showed he had agreed to the meeting, but because he had been assured that the Russian lawyer had official documents and information that would incriminate Clinton, the Democratic candidate for president. The email said the information would be very useful to your father.
The music promoter who arranged the meeting, Rob Goldstone, told Trump Jr. that the damaging information on Clinton was part of Russia and its governments support for Mr. Trump. Trump Jr. replied: If its what you say, I love it.
Trump WAS told the meeting was about receiving dirt on Clinton and agreed to it. That is not a crime or even in any way unseemly. It's called opposition research.
It was only after the meeting started that Trump Jr realized there was no dirt being offered and had an assistant call him out of the meeting.
There is a reason this request by the Senate Intel Comm. never amounted to anything.
A Rat,a Never Trumper...and the LA Times.Talk about predictable!
That post is so stupid it should hurt.
Need to get rid of Burr.
“Kiss a chance at flipping the courts goodbye if the Dems get Senate control.”
That is an excellent point! Keeping the Senate is looking like a problem at this moment.
“..Sometimes the GOP has to lose elections to eventually make progress. ..” I disagree wholeheartedly!!
I’ve heard those words and seen the consequences all my lengthy life. Throw the election and it always comes back to bite you - always. No game playing!!!
Agree !
2 Steps backward to make one step forward still means you lose !
So three months before the election he decides to go after Bannon? What about Strozk, Brennan, Comey, Rosenstein, Lisa Page et all? How in the hell does Bannon get moved to the top of that list?
“That is the most stupid comment I have ever read on this forum in at least 20 years.”
Hopefully he votes Trump this November. We need useful idiots as well.
“Need to get rid of Burr.”
Wrong wording - North Carolina needs to replace him with a strong conservative. NC Republicans need to select the right candidate for the job, and then support that person. Yes, NC has two Republican senators who are too moderate, but neither seat can be allowed to go Democrat. With the influx of northerners (Yamn Dankees), NC has been turning to the left. Perhaps to keep the seat they will need to keep moderates.
Burr is compromised.
A DEMONRAT controlled Senate will uphold ANY articles of impeachment for ANY reason against President Trump advanced by a DEMONRAT House of representatives.
Nothing to see...just move on....oh wait, he’s a conservative...throw him in jail for life.
