1,193 Quarantined for Covid. Is This a Successful School Reopening?
The New York Times ^ | August 12th, 2018 | By Richard Fausset

CANTON, Ga. — The first letter went out on Aug. 4, one day after students in the Cherokee County School District returned to their classrooms for the first time since the eruption of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Dear Parents,” wrote Dr. Ashley Kennerly, the principal of Sixes Elementary School. “I am writing this letter in order to communicate that a student in 2nd grade has tested positive for Covid-19.”

By the time the last bell rang on Friday afternoon, principals at 10 other schools had sent similar letters to families in Cherokee County, a bucolic and politically conservative stretch of suburbs north of Atlanta. This week, more letters went out.

Altogether, nearly 1,200 students and staff members in the district have already been ordered to quarantine. On Tuesday, one high school closed its doors until at least Aug. 31. A second high school followed on Wednesday.

YES

Being positive and not sick means nothing. Also, HOW MANY? 1? 100?

Are there not confirmed cases of asymptomatic carriers?

Well, actually it does.

As well know, most kids don’t get “sick” from this.

I would guess that you and I have a ton of viruses and bacteria running through our systems every day. And, if we were tested for those things...we would test positive.

I don’t want anyone getting sick. But no one is getting out of this life without being exposed.

From an “academic” point of view, I think it’s interesting to know if they are “sick” (symptomatic.). Does that make sense?

I’m from the area. If a child reports they are positive they tell that child’s entire class to stay home for two weeks. The media then counts all those kids as cases (quarantined), but only one kid was reported sick.

“How and why did they test that many people in one day...”

Example of distorted reporting.

Never does it say a thousand tested positive or were even tested.

Quarantine refers to people who may (or may not) have been exposed.

There were some cases so everyone potentially exposed is asked to stay home for a couple weeks.

Yes, that makes sense.

Kids rarely hurt by it.

Mature adults, not so much.

“There were some cases so everyone potentially exposed is asked to stay home for a couple weeks.”

This is certainly the case.

Is that the right policy?

My question is , “Why quarantine students if the all powerful mask mandate is in place?” Are they quarantining just students who tested positive? Are they quarantining students whose family members have tested positive? Are they quarantining all students when another student tested positive? Only the first two have merit from a medical standpoint.

There is no possible way to reopen schools if anyone in the school who might have been in contact with a (likely asymptomatic) kid who tests positive is forced into weeks of lockdown. It doesn’t work that way with flu; it should not work that way now.

We shut down for two weeks to prevent hospitals from being overrun in the first two weeks. Six months later we aren’t talking about hospitals anymore, now we have to self quarantine to prevent having to self quarantine.

No one wants to use kids as “guinea pigs” but I think we are going to have to track this stuff.

I would even go so far as to set up a school with several “5 minute” machines, and get permission to test everyone, every day.

It would be passive—meaning no one who did not want to participate would have to.

Then we could have some real data.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

“ Doesn’t matter, They could be coughing up blood and a certain % of parents will try to send them anyway.”

Always the case. Always the same demographic.

Who knows?

The whole premise of this lockdown mentality was that there could be carrriers like typhoid marys running around willy nilly and we would overwhelm the health care system.

Then reports surfaced that maybe thats not true,,,that asymptomatic people do not transmit the virus. And we certainly did not “overwhelm” the health care system. My state has all of 1100 hospitalizations and we are acting like we are NY or Milan Italy. Not exactly creating an issue.

While the virus is real, we have no real clue as to the severity of it because we do not have any reliable “science”.

I look at it this way: we go to Walmart and Target every dang day and those folks are not dropping dead in the aisles.

We really need to move on.

Where I’m at, they’re still feeding the kids over the summer. Schools open or closed, doesn’t matter.

Are they really positive or just showing one of the evergrowing list of symptoms?

It’s very misleading, both the headline and the story.

It does not make clear that virtually all of the >1000 students and staff in quarantine are there because of the THEORETICAL risk of exposure to an asymptomatic antigen or PCR positive person.

This policy of immediate quarantine of 1000 people because of a single positive test of unknown significance will, of course, make opening schools impossible - which is exactly what it is designed to do.

Almost all school reopening plans (with which I am very familiar) include this quarantine specification.

Without it, neither the school boards nor the teacher’s unions will agree to reopen.

It’s ignorant and it does nothing except make reopening impossible - which is its purpose.

Good question. Quite debatable.

If they test all for The virus and for antibodies, and if course monitor them for being sick, it would provide a huge amount of data relating to what to expect.
