Not So Magnificent. Chicago’s safest neighborhoods start sharing in the Windy City’s crime outbreak.
City Journal ^ | August 12, 2020 | Rafael A. Mangual

Chicago is truly a tale of two cities, especially regarding public safety. For those living in the city’s elite downtown and North Side neighborhoods, the carnage plaguing the South and West Sides has, for decades, seemed a world away—something they’d read about in the Chicago Tribune, but rarely, if ever, experience. Recent events have shattered those expectations, awakening many to the reality that, even along the Magnificent Mile, the line between peace and chaos is paper-thin.

Early Monday morning, caravans of mostly black Chicagoans from around the city descended on its famed shopping district, ransacking and looting luxury retailers like Coach, Louis Vuitton, and Burberry. Police responded, making more than 100 arrests, but the damage was done—and not just the brazen thefts. Two people were shot, and not by police.

The episode was apparently sparked by misinformation regarding a police shooting on the South Side on Sunday. The story that went viral: cops had shot and killed a 15-year-old black boy. The reality: officers from the Chicago Police Department had indeed shot a black male—20-year-old Latrell Allen, who is expected to recover. Police say that they responded to a report of a man with a gun, and that when they attempted to apprehend Allen, he fired at them. He has been charged with attempted murder.

For their part, Chicago officials denounced the rioters and corrected the record regarding the details of Sunday’s police shooting. At a press conference Monday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot rightly called the riot “an assault” on the city. Police Superintendent David Brown agreed, and added that the rioters had been “emboldened by (the lack of) consequences.” Brown was likely referring to the combination of forces—including the “progressive” approach of State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, the city’s reform of bail and remand laws

The episode was apparently sparked by misinformation

The Dems exploit this on a regular basis. They'll spout inflammatory lies to rabble rouse, and it works.

How do you distinguish the difference between progressive rabble and non rabble. Are the riff raff the rabble?

So the rest of Chicago is finally getting exactly what they have been voting for, for decades. Congrats.

Will lights suddenly turn on upstairs and get them to rethink their voting strategy? Answer: Nope!

Will the ones that move to safer places vote the same as with their new neighbors to keep it safe, or Kalifornicate their new community? They will Kalifornicate it.

The next step may be organized home invasions of the North side neighborhoods to seize reparations such as 70-inch TVs,

I lived in Chicago for years, about a block away from the heart of Monday’s riots along the Magnificent Mile. It was a beautiful area, and about as like the South and West Sides of the city as Norway would be to Venezuela. The whole area was overwhelmingly Dem liberals, feeling (and being) insulated from the horrible schools, daily crime, and wretched city services that prevailed in the poor areas. That insulation is gone and the negative impact on property and rental values and offsetting increased taxes will be dramatic. I’m just glad I never bought a condo there.

Ahh, diversity makes us so very strong. It needs to be everywhere so that everywhere can be “strong” from the diverse diversity which makes us so very strong. Suburbs, you might not be far enough away from it. Looting is reparations for the suffering of the diverse.

Hey, Hey, Hey!

They're about to get a taste of real equality.

The kind they have been voting to force on other people for years.

Good for them. They deserve a piece of the action also. Their votes helped to elect their leaders.

I would think the progressive rabble needs rousing by agitators. The riff raff just sort of has an instinct for it.

"The Dems exploit this on a regular basis"..

It's subversion by the commies.. Those who are causing all the riots in our nation are the Communist..
The sooner we recognize who our real enemies are, and what their intentions are, the sooner we will be able defeat them...

I would think these people are running out of places to loot and even people to kill in Chicago south. They are just expanding their market.

In Mayor Richard J Daley’s years as mayor, they were known as Lakefront Liberals. They would manage to elect one alderman who would drive Daley crazy.

Flash forward - these same Lakefront Liberals and their kids elected Lighthead as Mayor. How is that working out for you elitists?

Finally, liberals suffering the consequences of their political beliefs. If this happened more often we’d have fewer liberals.

"the line between peace and chaos is paper-thin"

Actually, the line has been quite thick. The real problem is that it is blue, and the corrupt and ignorant Democrat politicians are simply eliminating it.

I, for one, am sick and tired of seeing the words "bail reform" and "prison reform", as if some wrong is being righted and these things are being improved.

Bail reform means THERE IS NO BAIL ANYMORE. Prison reform means FELONS ARE BEING RELEASED.

There's your reform. How do you like the results?

The “looting text” that went out specifically said, “We are NOT looting south.” (And I think it said west, also.)

Aside from going where the nice loot is, they succeeded in having a chilling effect on tourism.
