CHICAGO (CBS) Is Chicagos Magnificent Mile at risk for massive store closures? Just two months ago it was the epicenter of unrest. Then this week there was a murder on Oak Street and Michigan Avenue. All of that is on top of a pandemic that has taken a toll on everyone.
A Chicago icon, the Magnificent Miles 13 blocks are known across the world. Its a draw for tourists and a serious boost to the citys bottom line. What would the city look like without all of this? Hopkins says we could find out.
There are existing vacancies, some stores still boarded up, others dealing with plummeting sales,
Were losing tax revenue, and we are losing sales tax on a daily basis, he said. If this trend continues, we wont have a viable downtown. And its not going to be that long. Were talking a few years. Privately theyre telling me they cant sustain this. They cant continue at the level theyre at right now, and if it keeps up, we are going to see a rash of business closures in the downtown area.
Hopkins was in a meeting with Mayor Lori Lightfoot and business owners in the area who were expressing their concerns, when the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon. Rapper FBG Duck was shot and killed. Two others were seriously injured.
Nordstrom and Bloomingdales and Ferragamo, and all large Marquee stores that are on the avenue here attract people from all over the world and all over the U.S. and Chicago, said Mike Riordan of the River North Residents Association. Its one thing to lose control one weekend, but then its another thing for this stuff to keep on going. It opened the floodgates to a bunch of brazenness and lawlessness that weve never seen here before.

After last night’s rioting and looting it’s dead now.
Amen
It opened the floodgates to a bunch of brazenness and lawlessness that weve never seen here before.
Worth saying again. Brought to you by your local Dem activists.
what the hell.... it’s a shame.
FBG Duck?
I think this is the same alderman who said a little while ago that the only way to handle the looting was to let it run its course.
Did this person vote for the stupid commie dyke? If so, reap what you sow.
i know!! FBG are my initials. and Duck?
ROTF! NBC is demanding ID from people seeking entance to the building. Someone tweet this to Trump!
Southside came to the Miracle Mile!
But its the mayors peeps destroying sh!t so its all good. Why should the south and west side have all the fun.
He should have ducked.
I had not heard anything.
I think yhe democrat-encouraged and -supported daily riots have become so commonplace they have dropped off the headlines.
>>FBG Duck?<<
I guess he didn’t.
This has been coming for a long time, but it’s exacerbated by the fact that City Hall is occupied by a mayor who is little more than a caretaker, essentially administering a going-out-of-business sale. Everybody in the region knows that Chicago has been turning into Detroit, but with Groot at the helm and Fat@ss in Springfield, the filth has been spiraling down the commode faster than ever.
“It’s dead, Jim.”
2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins who is now howling about his aldermanic district going up in smoke.
Freeloaders went ape shit last night. That’s the night Chicago died.
