The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Rocket Force recently launched a DF-26 intermediate-range anti-ship ballistic missile in an ongoing months-long exercise, after the US provocatively sent two aircraft carriers to the South China Sea for exercises and held joint naval drills with India, Japan and Australia in the Indian Ocean and Philippine Sea respectively in an attempt to contain China.
Capable of striking moving targets at sea, the DF-26 has been dubbed an "aircraft carrier killer," and its exercise launch again demonstrated its deterrence and China's firm will in safeguarding national sovereignty and security, experts said on Thursday.
A PLA Rocket Force missile brigade recently started a cross-regional confrontational exercise, as they maneuvered through complicated terrains such as forests, simulated hostile chemical attacks, disguised missile vehicles to avoid satellite detection and reached a desert area, where the troops received the order to launch a DF-26 missile, Chinese media reported over the past week.
The exercises honed the fast-reaction capabilities of the Rocket Force troops, and this kind of mission will continue in the next one to two months, CCTV reported.
Chinese military observers noted that this is a rare demonstration of a DF-26 launch. In January 2019, the launch of a DF-26 was shown to the general public in a China Central Television report for the first time.
Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times on Thursday that the latest drills demonstrated that the DF-26 has gained a stronger capability in real combat scenarios, including cross-regional maneuvering, and is not dependent on a preset launch site.

One of the issues with deploying systems that can carry conventional or nuclear arms is in the possible responses to detecting a launch. Since the opposing side doesn’t know if the missile is a limited strike or an escalation, the opposition may assume it is a nuclear strike and hit back with full nuclear force because of the fear of losing their second strike capability.
China is carrying on a continuous war of intimidation and small hits on the theory that, for example, no one will respond to their ship ramming them by firing a weapon to sink their vessel. So far, they are right. Because the first side to use actual weapons is the one provoking the war. So far, no one has decided to really hit back. But when there is a limited exchange, that could potentially cool back down, and China launches a weapon that could, potentially, be nuclear, the opposition may respond instantly with a full nuclear strike.
China plays a dangerous game, betting that the other side will always back down rather than risk massive casualties.

It is intended for western eyes. One thing I know. To build this weapon, every shortcut possible was taken and almost no testing was done
But even so, the missile has to acquire and keep a target at a very far range.
Believe me, anti-missile counter measures are in place and always being improved by the USN.
If we see this coming from on high (it is ballistic, not a cruise missile), mushrooms will be sprouting all over the Chicoms.
The DF-26 is the B-17 of its day. Originally conceived as a maritime patrol bomber they quickly found that they couldn’t hit maneuvering warships. Next to useless in its intended role. Of course they found another used for them.
The DF-26 may not be able to hit a carrier maeuvering at sea but they would make it impossible for the Marines to seize & hold any of this artificial islands. Maybe that’s why the Marines are switching to a raiding role?
Those are erector-launchers. The overhang in the back is to allow swing-room for the missile to pivot. Plus there is a practical limit to how long a vehicle can be and still swing turns on roads.
Aircraft carriers are protected by nuclear attack subs. They call them “attack” for a reason.
Escaping the dense forest is quite a feat for a anti-ship missile crew and then making it all the way to the desert is just nothing short of amazing.
Maybe it will acquire the ability to hit a moving target maneuvering ar sea thousands of miles away ... one day
