Your granddad must have been in my mother’s neighborhood. She was from a farm in Skane and went to school (boarding) in Malmo. She was a Groothoff. Does that ring a bell? She went to Tenafly, NJ, and worked as a weaver.

The Norwegians gave the Krauts a good run for their money though. They tried sailing the heavy cruiser Blucher up the Oslofiord past the Oscarberg Fortress on the night of April 9, 1940 and the Norwegians blew it out of the water.

I think the blond from ABBA is half German. They moved to Sweden because of prejudices against Germans after the war.

Actually it was Frida, the brunette that had the German father. He was a Wehrmacht soldier stationed in Norway during the war.

Could be! But when they left, they left for good, no looking back. They were eager to put down roots in their new country, then help the others who followed. I know my dad was pals with other immigrants’ kids, mostly Scandinavians and Germans. My dad told many wild stories about the mischief he and his best friend — a German boy named Otto — got up to. They all wanted to be all-American boys — movies, comics, bikes, hijinx, and sports, sports, sports. Then WWII . . .

Never heard the name Groothoff. Mine were named Nilsson and Persson.

My mother’s best friend was a Nilsson. She was a travel agent, and they stayed in contact all through the years until they passed.

Thanks to Quizling when German troops first disembarked from their troopships the first group out was a band. As the war went on toward the last days in the most northern region Austrian units prevented the Russians from advancing into Norway.

THE HEROES OF TELEMARK (1965)...There is a scene where the Norwegian resistance destroys German ship carrying heavy water...Heavy water is needed for nuclear weapon development...

Kirk Douglas was in that movie...

You’re bad, newfreep. : )

But you bring back good memories. Just last week I was on vacay with the family at 318 Strand Blvd, Oceanside CA for 10 days. Tremendous location/view of dolphins and surfers from our patio every day in the ocean. Saw cormorants gliding 30ft. above the ocean, then diving straight down under water to come up seconds later and sit on top of the ocean. I had to look that bird up as I had never seen that before. I HIGHLY recommend it if you can get there. 9 days later back in Michigan, I am still mentally in vacation mode.

Thanks for ABBA info. That was my nephew’s favorite group. R.I.P., Eric : (

(Great nephew from CA...my sis’s only child. Shot and killed in AZ at 21 years old ...still hurts 35 years later)

Life can be short. Enjoy every minute of every day. Every second of every minute.

Hug those kids.

In a previous lifetime, my wife and I were 19 y/o kids from Ohio who threw everything in the back of my ‘67 Mustang and headed west.

Eventually found an apt in Hollywood...just a couple of weeks before some guy name Charlie and his family of evil doers were doing their satanic acts.

We lived in Hollywood 5 years - loved everything there. From weekends at the beaches (Malibu to Santa Monica to Huntington), Las Vegas and even a few trips to Tijuana when the road was dirt as soon as you crossed the line,

Incredible weather and views....good times before returning to the snowy winters of SW Ohio.

WOW newfreep. Same experiences here from Michigan taking the family on multiple vacations out west. The amazing same beaches (sheesh I’ve got stories including one from Seal beach walking from the hot beach with my sis to a store (no mask required) to get a pop and finding a $100 bill on the floor in the store.
Huntington, Malibu (Neptune’s Net), Santa Monica pier, Venice (musclemen), Laguna (beautiful cove)...all of them unique and amazing. We’ve been at Oceanside beach the last 5 yrs on family vacay. I even took the family in my dad’s old van to Tijuana (boys standing on the curb and peeing in the streets, busses full of passengers with old bullet holes in the side) and experienced the dirt and dirt roads with huge potholes around the outskirts. I was down in the area the year they had that San Ysidro massacre at McDonalds. The contrast on the hillside landscape from San Diego to the tin-roofed outhouse-looking dwellings in Mehico. Whoa what memories...and the girls...whoa (good thing wifey is sleeping and not looking over me shoulder...maybe she’s monitoring my desktop with her iPhone...can never be too paranoid these days with the ‘rona on the loose and technology being what it is...BIG BROTHER/BIG MAMA/BIG UNCLE $AM.) Anyway...I’ll risk it...I’ve been in the doghouse before...move over puppy.
