Something about this just rubs me the wrong way ... like he was cultivating himself to spend a lifetime living at the taxpayers expense.
Kobach had a lifetime desire to go to West Point, but he came down with a disqualifying illness and his dream of being a career Army officer was crushed. Should he have gone to Podunk Community College instead? But, I'm sure you know all about the facts.
Having grown up in Kansas for 25 years and then living in Missouri in a border county for another 35, I have some background opinions on Kansas politics. Kansas is not solidly conservative, they are 1940-50s era Main Street Mercantile / Farmer Republican.
Alf Landon, Governor Bennet, three other Governors, Bob Dole etc. I have met a lot of them.
This distinction has led to a long time split in the Republican Party for the last 30 years, thereby crippling them. The Conservatives like Koback pander to there base alone and end up failing to unite the Republicans at large. The Main Street guys do the same. The weak result is often a Democrat Governor or worse.
