The dramatically scaled-down Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, will be closed to the press, a convention spokesperson and Republican official familiar with the plans tell CNN.
Reporters will not be allowed on site as RNC delegates vote to formally nominate President Donald Trump as the 2020 Republican presidential nominee, but the vote will be livestreamed, the Republican official said.
The restriction is unprecedented in modern American political history, but Republican officials said they were forced to limit attendance due to social distancing restrictions imposed by the governor of North Carolina. "Given the health restrictions and limitations in place within the state of North Carolina, we are planning for the Charlotte activities to be closed press Friday, August 21 -- Monday, August 24," the RNC convention spokesperson said in a statement Saturday.
"We are happy to let you know if this changes, but we are working within the parameters set before us by state and local guidelines regarding the number of people who can attend events," the spokesperson said.

To slow the spread of covid, you understand.
I thought the Republican convention had been moved to Jacksonville.
I thought the RNC pulled out of Charlotte last month.
Gosh, wouldn’t want CNN to get coronavirus.
Bttt
They should have taken it to Rapid City, where they would have been allowed to have a real convention. Biden/DNC/Antifa/BLM unmolested to violently gather by the tens of thousands free of any threat or repercussions. Republicans and conservatives must hide in back alleys to try to eek out a last few constitutional rights.
“I thought the Republican convention had been moved to Jacksonville.”
That is what I thought. Confused.
The Jacksonville portion was cancelled last week due to the coronavirus hotspots in FL and they put it back where it was - Charlotte.
these are the same asses that were questioning even having the convention because of COVID
Just went looking. The President did not want to accept the nomination in Charlotte. So that is why it was moved to FL. Guess the RINOs won
Sad to hear Herman Cain died last week.
I think we all heard he was at the Tulsa rally. Was this true ?
I heard blame on the lack of masks for his contracting and then dying from ChinaVirus.
Will Trump be going to his funeral ? Will the media care ?
That was just a smear. Cain was a lot of places including Arizona so nobody knows how he go it.
“We are happy to let you know if this changes, but we are working within the parameters set before us by state and local guidelines regarding the number of people who can attend events,” the spokesperson said.
Boomshakalaka!
2020 is a totally crazy year.
Charlotte to Jacksonville to Charlotte.
Are we there yet? ;-)
“Will Trump be going to his funeral?”
Since Herman Cain was a Republican there probably won’t be a funeral due to the COVID-19 virus. Funerals are only allowed for Democrat media spectaculars.
Not only moved, but then canceled all together. nothing like CNN for fake news.
Ohhh, nooooo! I was so looking forward to the deluge of balloons on What’s-her-ugly-face.
Andrea Somebody?
I bet this isn't the last time it is moved. Could be part of a plan to force the opposition to waste resources in multiple locations. Would be hilarious to move it to not-before-named location close to convention time. There aren't going to be many people there, so very few would have their travel plans disrupted.
