GOP Appears Ready to Cave on $600-a-Week Unemployment Benefit

Senate Republicans and Democratic leaders are huddled in the White House this weekend looking for a deal on a coronavirus relief package that can pass both the House and Senate as well as being signed by the president.

With the enhanced federal unemployment benefit of $600 a week expiring on Friday, the Republicans now appear willing to extend that benefit for the short term — several weeks at least. The Senate wants to bring an unemployment benefits bill to the floor as early as next week, but Democrats are balking. They want the whole $3 trillion package they passed in the House or nothing.

Democrats are calculating that Donald Trump is so desperate for a deal that he will eventually be forced to give in to Democratic demands and approve a sizable chunk of that $3 trillion. It includes increasing food stamp aid, monies for state and local governments with virtually no strings attached, and aid for beleaguered renters and homeowners on the verge of being evicted.

It will also include $1200 payments to individuals — another top Trump priority.

“FR isn’t a good representative of the average American.”

I agree. At FR when the unemployment rate goes levels at 11.5% or goes up, Freepers who are well informed will rightfully point out that nobody is going to sacrifice $600 extra a week doing nothing to actually go to work for much less.

The average American will see the unemployment rate stuck at 11.5% (or rising) as a failure of Donald Trump and the republican party. The ads are already being played daily.

Are the ads honest? Absolutely not. But as you say FR isn’t a good representative of the average American because the average American is not as informed as people at FR.

I would far prefer we “cave”

Basically you’re saying that caving to more unemployed over less unemployed is a good strategy

It’s not the amount that is preventing people from going back to work. It’s the type and kind of work that is offered. Called back from your previous employer and refuse? Lose your benefits. Simple.

Standard middle class white-collar service industry jobs are gone at least for a few years. Seems only no- or low-skill entry-level blue-collar low-paying manual labor jobs are left. Good luck forcing tens of millions of unemployed service-industry workers into these low-paying manual labor jobs. It’s just not happening. Most Americans haven’t worked in that type of job for maybe a half-century. Yeah I admit, many of us are spoilt, choosing to make careers forged on educational credentials and brain power rather than bulking up and doing muscle work or choosing a skilled trade early in our life. So what now?

Until the service industry comes back, it’s a permanent unemployment situation.

No, I’m saying winning the election is more important than cutting off federal UI payments right now.

The government caused it

You left out the words ‘of China’ after the word government.

No, two restaurants had to close because the government shut them down for months.

No, the restaurants survived the shut down doing curb-side but when the shut down ended nobody applied for the job openings necessary for them to open back up fully and after weeks of trying to fill those positions they finally had to close.

Obviously if Covid-19 did not happen, there would have been no shut down, there would have been no disruption and there would not have been no free extra $600 on top of UE each week. The restaurants survived the shutdown but were not able to open fully after the shutdown because they could not fill the positions to be staffed enough to do so.

This is what matters, the rest wouldn’t be an issue.
They survived the shutdown due to no evictions, bailout money, and probably some savings. Blaming the servers is bullshit.

I never suggested cutting off federal UI payments. I’m against the extra $600. It’s an incentive to not go back to work and each person collecting is counted as unemployed and you can bet the democrats are going to exploit the unemployment rate. They already are.

Most Americans are against paying people not working $600 extra a week for doing nothing while working Americans are making much less and they see themselves as risking their own lives while others risk nothing and make much more staying home.

There are no servers. That’s the point. There is no staff to support fully reopening.

And what do you think they would make?
There are barely any customers, so yes, it makes sense for them to stay on UI.
The country needs to completely open for those jobs to have any useful value.

If they cave I will cave when it’s time to vote. There is no one else to vote for and I don’t want more of the same. Just don’t vote and get it over with.

Well, you’ve got me there. It certainly is good economics, in a philosophical sense, to go whole hog on preserving the senat and getting the house

I must say though that if that happens can every Freepers and every lurker just descend on the gop congress creeps and harass the living heck out of them. Exorcism style?

The point is not what I think. I’m already voting for Donald Trump. This is not an election of Conservatives vs Liberal nor Republican vs Democrat. To me it’s Freedom vs Tyranny. I’m voting against the D all the way to dog catcher.

Why not pay the unemployed $2500 a week and just guarantee it until jan 20th (President Trump’s last day in office four years from now if he wins?

And to increase his chances, why not offer the already employed an extra $600 a week of aid until the above date. You know, secure the vote. I know you or I may not support this idea but if it will help us win the election... why not?

How about free college to those who are unemployed. That should help us “win the war” too. You know, secure the vote. I know you or I may not support this idea but if it will help us win the election... why not?

You know, President Trump has done far better than even he promised. I have faith in him. I truly believe him when he said by next year the economy will be back bigger and better than even before. I truly believe that can happen. But if we encourage people not to work by giving them an extra $600 on top of their unemployment - that’s only going to reflect a higher unemployment rate.

We can do better than that. I know Trump can do better than that. He’s proven it to us before.

I do respect you and I respect your ideas and I know you’re not stupid. I just disagree.

I hope and pray you’re right because I really do see this election as Freedom vs Tyranny and I know you are on the same side as I am.

Yeah we could have used this money to massively bail out the banks again or spend trillions on wars in shitholes for the saudis or some other inbred tyrannts, what a waste.

Most restaurants opened with 25% capacity or take-out only. People called back were getting hours cut to 25% normal hours and possible tips were cut due to 25% capacity.

Hence the reason why people did not want to return. Return for what? To make 1/4 of what wages they made before? In some states, any work disqualifies unemployment.

Worse case was furloughed, called back then furloughed again. Some states it’s a new claim, with the long wait associated with a new claim.

I don’t think we have that option. This is Freedom vs Tyranny. I will NOT sit this election out.

As you think the 40 to 50 million unemployed are lazy and a waste to current taxpayers as yourself, maybe you have an idea where these 40 to 50 million unemployed former taxpayers can find work.

Service, tourism, sports and travel industry destroyed and won’t be back for years.

Tourism. Gone.
Sports. Gone.
Entertainment. Gone.
Movie Industry. Gone.
Outdoor recreation. Gone.
Hotels and casinos. Gone.
Fairs and Carnivals. Gone.
Meetings, Events, Conference industry. Gone.
Concert Industry. Gone.
Theater Industry. Gone.
Amusement and Theme Parks. Gone.
Airlines. Devastated.

University towns devastated.

Except for fast-food chain restaurants, restaurants devastated.

Except for Amazon, Walmart, Target and the other big-box stores, retail devastated.

Except for mega corporation grocery store chains, groceries devastated.
