2nd stimulus check updates: Nancy Pelosi blasts plan to reduce unemployment benefit as GOP finalizes COVID-19 relief package

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday assailed Republican “disarray” over a new pandemic relief package as the White House suggested a narrower effort might be necessary, at least for now.

The California Democrat panned the Trump administration’s desire to trim an expiring temporary federal unemployment benefit from $600 weekly to about 70% of pre-pandemic wages. “The reason we had $600 was its simplicity,” she said from the Capitol.

The administration’s chief negotiators — White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin — spent a few hours at the Capitol later Sunday to put what Meadows described as “final touches” on a $1 trillion relief bill Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to bring forward Monday afternoon.

“We’re done,” Mnuchin said as he and Meadows left Capitol Hill after meeting with GOP staff.

Surely, the time has to be almost up for the vile, demonic Botoxian. The Reaper should harvest this demon and send it back to its Big Daddy in hell.

All I want to know is that I and my wife are retired on Soc Sec, and will we get another stimulus check, or is that too much for the well paid (and still paid) politicians.

Remember there are 4.3 weeks in a month. It’s 2600. Here in California people who were making more than about 2750 are pulling in $4555 total unemployment

Not to mention that the “essential” worker bees are watching, while getting paid less than the stay at homes. That has to end.

I had to send in some nice amounts of money for tax day. I know plenty of state workers who work half-time or not at all and haven’t missed a paycheck. I know of other people who can’t get their employees to come back because they are scared of the wu flu (and just so happen to be making more on unemployment).

Stop the free rides!

Shift that money to business tax credit to pay lowest paid workers—US citizens only via eVerify—$15 per hour. Wean them off unemployment, may]ke work pay equally.

Sounds like you will get it. I know people on SS who got it the first time. What I think is unfortunate are those adults who are elderly and a dependent on their child’s tax return...they get nothing. However, a dependent child is worth an extra $500. Not sure about the latter this time around.

I sense some confusion here. Is there to be a second $1,200 stimulus for all or just an extension of unemployment benefits with the $600 kicker reduced ot eliminated.

I f there is another $1,200 most of mine will got to the Republican Senate Election Committee, some to President Trump and some to Free Republic.

We must preserve the Senate at all cost in spite of self righteous conservative sniping

All of these can use the money better than me

People ARE refusing to go back to work because they are making $2400 FED + whatever STATE UIC there is.

EXACTLY. That is so because part of the legislation I think said something about they could refuse work if they did not feel safe. Not mentioning names, but a relative is an executive in a small listed pharma company. This is the problem they are having, despite having no virus issues, a good deal of the admin staff refuses to return to work because they are getting close to total pay for not working plus maintaining their personal time. The president directed the personnel manager to note those not returning so when things get back to normal, when and if the benies stop, to have set to go job announcements to replace those who deemed working there not safe, despite blow back from the PM about potential liabilities. His comment to that was I am here, you are here and some of the staff is here. Those who are not don’t need to be here, ever.

That said, the $1200 stimulus checks are a bigger joke. It is WELFARE not stimulus. The economy needs no stimulus based on another trillion or so deficit spending. It is vote buying, nothing more.

The part that gripes me is that many live with their parents and were only working two days a week part time. That’s what they wanted to work pre covid. Now they don’t qualify for much U/E ...maybe only $40week. BUT..they now make $640 week and when they worked their job they made $208week. They make three times what they were willing to work for, to now stay home.
MILLIONS OF THEM.

Pelosi/All Out Crazy logic...If $600 per week is simple, $1,800 will be three times as simple....

And now they will be motivated to go put down the game controller, get off the couch, go to the polls and vote for the party that promises they can keep that benefit indefinitely.

“The reason we had $600 was its simplicity,” (Pelosi) said from the Capitol.

Huh?

Yeah, Nan, make it easy on yourselves. It’s not like we’re paying you to make complicated decisions.

But maybe you could put down your ice cream spoon long enough to explain to us exactly why you want to pay people more for not working than they made working.

In the last 48 hrs, 2 full time employees walked off the job w/o notice. These folks, who are fully trained and valuable to our company, had just had enough. They had been working during the entire covid thing, all while knowing their colleagues were being paid more than they usually earn, by staying home. Meaning these folks had a bigger workload and taking more crap from customers. The now returning employees are discussing what they did with their extra money and their paid vacation. Not good.

When they finally had something said to them that hit their last nerve, they quit.

The resentment is palpable and real. Who can blame them?

If you’re fired for cause or quit that has always meant they you don’t get UI. Has that changed? Hadn’t heard about it if so.

I’m still waiting for my first stimulus check. We qualify for a check, but are fine without one so I’m not losing sleep over it. I’m also not holding my breath.
