Sorry, but even back then Hollywood was a cesspool in comparison with the rest of America. Yes, there were many ladies and gentlemen involved. Miss de Havilland and Jimmy Stewart come to mind. But there’s a reason why before the twentieth century, when “entertainment” became an actual industry with global mass appeal, enormous profits, and huge cultural influence, that actors and actresses were viewed as socially on a par with whores and carnival freaks. With the cooperation of a press riding the gravy train with them, the studios were able to hide most of the slime.
