Thoughts?
I don’t know. It’s not really necessary to hold it. They used to serve a purpose in the past when they actually would nominate the candidate.
If it risks getting people sick, and is sure to draw the domestic terrorist groups (who would then blame the violence on the GOP/Pres. Trump), why not do it in a different way ? Online speeches and whatnot. As another poster pointed out, the GOP convention just gives the media and pop culture more time to savage it.
Conventions are antiquated, from a time when delegates actually choose the nominee and the party platform that used to be debated mattered at least a little, instead of not all like today.
But I like them anyway, I like watching our people give speeches with the cheering and chanting, and I like heckling the rats. Part of the election fun and a touch of history.
That said, this thing in JAX was already FUBAR, moved outside, Mayor demands masks, no one RSVPing. Going ahead with it under these circumstances would just piss off locals in swing area of a swing state while allowing the media to claim it caused a “spike” and mock “low attendance”. There was no real choice.
We just need the Pres to give a speech, somewhere. And hopefully rallies are possible in at least some states before the election.
The conventions may never return in the same form, especially given how expensive they are, they don’t do much for the parties, don’t even help carry the state they are in.
